Sophie Turner has opened up about the challenges she's been facing as a single mother amid her highly publicized divorce from musician Joe Jonas.
The actress explained that her new role in the upcoming crime series "Joan" helped her through the difficult phase, adding that it came around a time in her life when she had to "have strong will and fight."
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas have now reached an agreement almost one year after the singer filed for divorce.
Sophie Turner Says Being A Single Mother Is A 'Struggle'
In a recent conversation with The Sunday Times, the "Game of Thrones" actress admitted that being a single mother has been a "struggle" for her amid her divorce from Jonas.
The singer filed for divorce from Turner on September 5, 2023, noting that "the marriage between the parties is irretrievably broken." The former couple subsequently became embroiled in a nasty custody battle for their children, for their children, daughters Willa and Delphine.
However, Turner shared that her latest role as Joan in the upcoming series "Joan" has been a therapeutic source of strength.
"Joan changed me quite a lot. From utter desperation comes so much will and ambition," she told the publication. "The series came around at a time in my life when I had to be ambitious and I had to have such strong will and fight against the forces. She gave me a lot of strength."
"If I hadn't been a mother, I don't know if I would have been able to bring the same energy that I did into it. It's such a struggle being a single mother," Turner added.
Sophie Turner And Joe Jonas Settled Their Divorce
Turner and Jonas recently reached a settlement in the year-long divorce proceeding.
According to People Magazine, a Florida judge ruled that their marriage is "irretrievably broken. " The legal document noted that the agreement is "in the best interests of the parties and this family." However, details about it were kept under wraps.
The judge allowed them to waive the 20-day waiting period for final judgment at the time, adding, "The marriage between the parties is dissolved and the parties are restored to the status of being single."
Turner is seemingly moving forward with her love life after she recently went Instagram official with her boyfriend, aristocrat Peregrine Pearson.
The Actress Claimed She Was Blindsided By The Divorce
After Jonas filed for divorce from Turner, the actress shared in her response filing that the "breakdown of her marriage" to the singer "happened very suddenly."
The two had been married for four years and seemed to be a happy couple outwardly. However, they appeared to have more than their fair share of arguments at home.
One such argument occurred last year on August 15, Jonas's 34th birthday. Barely a month later, the singer filed for divorce.
According to a report, Turner alleged at the time that she did not get notice of the divorce, claiming in her filing that she "found out through the media."
Sophie Turner Gushes Over Her Role In The Series 'Joan'
According to the Daily Mail, Turner recently disclosed that her role in the new crime thriller left her "swept away" with emotions after she started working on it during her divorce from Jonas.
The series sees the 28-year-old actress portray the real-life Joan "The Godmother" Hannington and follows her journey from being a housewife to a petty offender, a diamond thief, and a criminal mastermind.
"I'm a Pisces, I'm emotional," she said about having to be emotional to play the role.
Regarding her new role as mother Joan, Turner said, "She is so funny, but she has gone through so much trauma and is so ambitious. There really is so much to her – mother, lover, liar, thief. It's just remarkable that it's all a true story."
Playing Joan Came Naturally For The Actress
Elsewhere in her chat with The Times, the "Time Freak" actress teased that playing the role of mother Joan came naturally to her, as she is an emotional person.
Speaking about playing her character, Turner said that it was very emotional for her, especially because children were involved.
"You have to remember that this is to provide a solid and stable life for her daughter so she can get her back. And it's really a heartbreaking story," she explained.
She was also full of praise for Frank Dillane, her co-star, "We became really close actually during this. It was imperative that we had a good relationship and I think I kind of artistically fell in love with Frank a little bit because the way he works is so fascinating. I really found myself kind of relying on him for a lot of it, the kind of emotional stuff."
Dillane returned the sentiment, saying that Turner "is so easy to love" and that he "found it just such a pleasure."
