Russell Simmons Accused Of Dodging Deposition In Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Russell Simmons still has his sexual harassment case hanging over his head.

The business mogul has been accused of evading answering questions under oath by an undisclosed former Def Jam executive who dragged him to court.

Rusell Simmons, who co-founded Def Jam Productions in 1984, has been accused of raping the plaintiff at his apartment during her time as a staff at the company.

The plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, claimed she requested the 66-year-old attend a deposition via Zoom and answer a few questions under oath about the lawsuit.

Based on discussions with Simmons' attorneys, the alleged victim and her lawyer declared to the court that "it does appear the parties are at an impasse on several important issues."

She noted that she asked for the music producer and some former Def Jam employees to be deposed, but Simmons has not answered any questions that could help the case move forward.

According to In Touch, the accuser believes a deposition would "obviate the need for his answering the interrogatories." But Simmons has not agreed to do either of the two.

In her filing, Jane Doe claimed the music mogul forcefully had his way with her during a business meeting at his New York apartment located in Manhattan.

"This lawsuit chronicles the account of how a woman who, while pursuing her career and passion as a music executive, was sexually harassed, assaulted, sexually battered, and raped by her boss, Russell Simmons," she explained in the lawsuit.

The accuser noted that Simmons' status as a powerful and rich celebrity with overwhelming influence has allowed his "abusive behavior to go unchallenged for decades."

She shared that they typically held meetings at Simmons' Manhattan home and on the day, she consulted him to review a new video for approval.

"Initially, Russell began to 'wrestle' with Ms. Doe in an attempt to appear playful. The situation escalated into aggression, and Russell pined Ms. Doe down on a bed." the suit alleged.

The accuser continued that she told Simmons to get off her, but he refused and proceeded to forcefully have his way with her.

The accuser stated that she was "wrought with distress" after the ordeal, especially because she was at the "peak of her career success at Def Jam, making award-winning videos for their biggest artists."

She continued that she experienced "overwhelming anxiety, shame, humiliation, and debilitating low self-esteem." She also dealt with frequent panic attacks and struggled to go to the Def Jam "offices or to function in her leadership role."

She eventually had to quit the job she loved shortly after the assault and confided in "a small group of trusted friends and therapists about what had happened."

The music producer denied every account of the unidentified accuser and argued that the plaintiff's claims were barred because the former Def Jam employee "released her claims against Simmons" in a 1997 agreement.

He requested that the court dismiss the case as he does not live in the United States. Simmons stated that he lives in Bali and even submitted his Balinese driver's license, proof that he sold his property in New York in 2021, and his bank account details in Bali.

His attorney also argued that he did not need a deposition "under the order for limited discovery," adding, "We believe a deposition is unduly burdensome, duplicative, and intended to harass our client."

Last week, the judge in the case ruled that the accuser's request for documents is "overbroad, burdensome, and go far beyond the limited discovery authorized." The judge, however, ordered depositions to be granted in the case.

Ironically, earlier in the month, The Blast reported that the music mogul petitioned the court to force his former partner to appear for a deposition in New York and release private text messages between her and Tim Leissner as well as her financial advisors.

The Def Jam Productions co-founder claimed that he was entitled to know the details of these conversations to help him prove his case, as his lawyer noted: "The only text messages Ms. Lee has produced appear to be messages sent or received by Defendant Leissner, not her."

Simmons also claimed that Kimora has "steadfastly refused to attend her deposition  in New York." The legal drama between the ex-couple began in 2021 over shares in the energy drink company Celsius.

The record executive accused his former partner of using the funds from the shares to bail her ex-husband, Leissner, without his consent or permission.

Russell Simmons' accuser did not specify the damages requested in the ongoing sexual harassment case.
