New 'Friends' Game Show Greenlit Featuring 'Nostalgia' Rooms

Get ready to pivot into nostalgia! A brand-new "Friends"-themed game show has been announced at MAX.

Participants will face challenges set in the show’s most iconic locations, where they’ll have to channel their inner Monica, Ross, and Rachel to win. It’s a chance to relive classic moments and see if fans have what it takes to be the ultimate friend.

MAX revealed on Monday, September 23, that they have approved a new "Friends" competition game show set in the flagship Friends Experience in New York City.

Named "Fast Friends," the show will invite fans to compete in “18 nostalgia-filled rooms, activations, and recreated sets,” as stated in a press release.

“'Fast Friends,' a new four-part game show, will take place in the celebrated series’ iconic sets in a fast-paced competition event,” the announcement read, per People. “From racing through Rachel and Monica’s apartment to darting across Joey and Chandler’s bachelor pad and grabbing a coffee at Central Perk, fans will re-live their favorite moments while being put to the test with trivia, puzzles, and games that will keep even the most die-hard 'Friends' fans on their toes."

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the sitcom's premiere, the streaming service will also enhance its content on the app and introduce bonus featurettes. These include "Friends From The Start," where “the creative team discusses the development and casting of Friends while reflecting on the challenges that arose during the early years," as well as "When Friends Become Family," which “delve[s] into the inspiration and development of some of the most iconic episodes and favorite moments from Friends."

Plus, "The Legacy of Friends" will feature “the creative team discussing bringing 'Friends' to an end and reflecting on the pop culture influence and lasting legacy of the series.”

"Friends," featuring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer, premiered on September 22, 1994, and ran for ten seasons until 2004 on NBC.

The beloved show follows a group of six friends—Rachel Green (Aniston), Ross Geller (Schwimmer), Monica Geller (Cox), Chandler Bing (Perry), Joey Tribbiani (LeBlanc), and Phoebe Buffay (Kudrow)—navigating life in New York City.

Last year, the world lost one of the stars of "Friends," Matthew Perry, to "acute effects of ketamine."

The creators of the iconic NBC sitcom, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, along with executive producer Kevin S. Bright, recently reflected on Perry's passing, which has cast a shadow over the celebration of the show's milestone anniversary.

“It’s a huge loss and it does make the 30th a little fraught,” Kauffman said on the "Today" show, per The Hollywood Reporter. Bright later added, “He made us laugh every day.”

“He’d been fighting the good fight for so long, and it really did feel like, from the [2021 cast] reunion on, that he had finally found some peace," Bright said of the late actor.

Perry endured a prolonged and highly public battle with addiction, primarily related to alcohol and prescription medications. His struggles began in his early 20s, coinciding with the height of Friends' popularity, which brought a significant amount of pressure.

While he captivated audiences as the witty and charming Chandler Bing, the reality was that Perry faced considerable personal challenges behind the scenes.

“Two things come to mind [about how to celebrate him]: one of them is to donate to drug treatment centers — let’s fight the disease,” Kauffman said. “And the second way is to watch 'Friends' and remember him not as a man who died like that but as a man who was hilariously funny and brought joy to everybody.”

After a thorough investigation, five individuals have been charged in connection with Perry's death. Among those charged are Dr. Mark Chavez, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, and Erik Fleming, who admitted to distributing the ketamine associated with Perry's passing. Also facing charges are Jasveen Sangha, dubbed “the Ketamine Queen,” and Kenneth Iwamasa, Perry's live-in personal assistant.

"Fast Friends" will be executive-produced by Dan Sacks, Bridgette Theriault, and Dan Norris, with Richard Burgio serving as co-executive producer.
