D.L. Hughley Slams Janet Jackson Over Kamala Harris' Race Comment
By Afouda Bamidele on September 23, 2024 at 3:15 PM EDT
D.L. Hughley is the latest critic to attack Janet Jackson for seemingly echoing Donald Trump's confusion about Kamala Harris' race.
The drama began after a recent interview saw the "Rhythm Nation" hitmaker claiming Harris wasn't Black because she has a white father. The false information went viral, with Hughley chiming in on X.
D.L. Hughley did not hold back in his criticisms, slamming Janet Jackson as the last person who should go after a Black woman. His words come after the singer allegedly axed a manager for apologizing to Kamala Harris.
D.L. Hughley Calls Out Janet Jackson For False Claims About Kamala Harris
Hughley aired his grievances against Janet in a series of X posts, claiming her misinformed comments about Harris stemmed from her support for Trump. He argued that the singer should not be judging the VP's race, writing:
"#JanetJacksons interview sounded like a #Trump rally! FYI!! It's a little ironic to question whether someone is black while you're breathing through the nose of a white woman! #TeamDl."
Hughley's tweet sparked mixed reactions, with some X users finding his words problematic, but the criticisms only strengthened the comedian's beliefs. He doubled down on his stance in a second post that read:
"All I know is #Kamala looks like she did when she was in Oakland! But Janet don't look like she did when she was Penny! What the hell was in that iron??"
Hughley Refutes The Singer's Comment About Harris' Father
In a third tweet, Hughley refuted Janet's claims about Harris' father by reminding fans about the politician's unique heritage. His message read:
"#KamalaHarris looks the way she does cuz she has a mom from India and a dad from Jamaica! #JanetJackson looks the way she does cuz she has a plastic surgeon! #TeamDl."
Although Janet was misinformed about Harris' race, she did not seem inclined to apologize to the VP. The Blast recently reported that a man claiming to be her manager was fired for trying to clear the air.
Janet's Former Manager Speaks Out About His Dismissal
Janet's former manager, Mo Elmasri, alleged the singer and her brother, Randy Jackson, axed him for issuing an apology to Harris in her name. In his words:
"Janet Jackson fired me due to disagreements between me, her, and Randy after she met with the Guardian and her unbalanced statements."
Elmasri noted in a different statement that his apology to Harris on Janet's behalf was an attempt to improve her "image in front of public opinion and her fans." Part of his message read:
"Janet Jackson would like to clarify her recent comments. She recognizes that her statements regarding Vice President Kamala Harris' racial identity were based on misinformation."
Inside The 'Nasty' Hitmaker's Comments About Harris
Janet's controversial comments about Harris' race happened during an interview with The Guardian. Although she confessed that she wasn't well-informed, the singer still speculated about the VP's heritage, saying:
"Well, you know what they supposedly said? She's not Black. That's what I heard. That she's Indian."
When the interviewer clarified that Harris is of both Black and South Asian descent, Janet doubled down on her beliefs, arguing: "Her father's white. That's what I was told."
"I mean, I haven't watched the news in a few days. I was told they discovered her father was white," Janet added. Her misinformed comments mirrored Trump's confusion about Harris' race months earlier.
Donald Trump Claims Kamala Harris 'Happened To Turn Black'
During a July event with the National Association of Black Journalists, Trump questioned Harris' racial identity and what he believed was a sudden decision to become a Black woman.
"She was always of Indian heritage, and she was promoting Indian heritage. I didn't know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black," Trump claimed, adding:
"And now she wants to be known as Black. So I don't know, is she Indian, or is she Black?"
The VP's mixed heritage stemmed from her father, Donald Harris, a Jamaican-American economist, while her late mother was an accomplished breast cancer researcher from southern India.
Will Janet Jackson apologize for misunderstanding Kamala Harris' racial identity, or will she stand by Donald Trump's beliefs?
