Blessed be the fruit.

Hulu’s hit show “The Handmaid’s Tale” is in its fourth season, and star Elisabeth Moss has dropped a few hints for what fans can expect coming up on the show, based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name.

Fans have been waiting a long time for the next chapter in June’s story, as the COVID-19 pandemic created an almost two-year gap between seasons 3 and 4.

In a tongue-in-cheek exchange on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” when Jimmy Fallon asked what fans can expect in this upcoming season, Moss replied, “More laughs.”

“More laughs, more pratfalls, you know?” Moss joked. “Just a lot of bits. Cameos galore.”

Getting a bit more serious, Moss explained that, “I do feel like we have built something over the past three seasons that quite rightly needs to be fulfilled and I think we do that this season. We fulfill a lot of the promises we’ve made over the past three years  and we really get to see, not just June, but a lot of these characters really go to places they’ve never gone before and change dramatically.”

“It’s a huge season,” Moss continued. “Which, of course, we chose to shoot during a pandemic, as you do.”

This season, Moss decided to make her directing debut, at the helm for not one, not two, but three episodes. Although she was slated to only direct one episode during the season, COVID-19 restrictions pushed her into developing her directing chops.

“I chose to direct the first [episode],” Moss explained. “Episode 3. That was going to be my directorial debut before COVID and [we] started it. Then we shut down for six months, went back, and then, all of a sudden, I did that episode, I did two more. I did episodes 8 and 9. I was like, because no one else was there a lot of the time, like, if a director finished their work and left, and they didn’t want to come back, and quarantine for two weeks, somebody had to direct it. So all of a sudden, I was sort of the director on hand.”   

In a featured clip of the upcoming season that Moss herself directed, we see Aunt Lydia, played by Ann Dowd, sitting in the back of a car with several handmaids, including June.

“Well, isn’t it so wonderful being all together again, isn’t it, yeah?” Aunt Lydia asks. The scene shows a few close-ups of the handmaid’s faces before June’s face adopts a look of rage as she attacks Aunt Lydia.

The clip ends there, but it certainly builds the suspense for what fans can come to expect in season 4. Shots from the official trailer also hint at more of a romance developing between star-crossed lovers June and Nick.  

Fans are understandably excited to see where the story will lead their favorite characters in season 4.

“Finally! Feels like it’s been years,” one fan tweeted. “I might have to watch everything all over again just to remember what happened last.”

“The world isn’t ready. I know I’m not,” another fan commented.

“You know what would be totally super awesome?” another asked. “Releasing episode 1 early this weekend. Considering the pandemic and all that we’ve been through, that would be such a sweet gesture to the faithful and adoring fans of the show.”

Whether or not Hulu will release an episode early remains to be seen, but Episode 1 “Pigs” and Episode 2 “Nightshade” are set to air exclusively on Hulu starting April 28.
