It’s been seven years since the season finale of “How I Met Your Mother.” The hit CBS sitcom was a critical and ratings success, and relaunched Neil Patrick Harris‘ career. Now, there’s good news for fans of the beloved show, a sequel is in the works.

“How I Met Your Father” is the name of the sequel, which will be on Hulu. However, none of the original cast will be featured on the new show. Instead it’ll be a cast of newcomers with Hilary Duff in the lead role.

“How I Met Your Mother” premiered on CBS in September 2005. The cast featured Josh Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel, and Cobie Smulders. The series focused on Radnor’s character Ted, who through a series of flashbacks and narration tells his children how he met their mother.

Although, Ted is the main focus of the show, his friends Marshall, Lily, Barney, and Robin also become central characters. Throughout the seasons, fans watch as the characters experience ups and downs in their lives. One of the biggest storylines during the show’s run is Ted’s on-again, off-again relationship with Robin.

After nine years on the air, “HIMYM” ended in March 2014. Although, the series finale was met with mixed reviews, the show is still considered a classic by fans.

A spinoff for “How I Met Your Mother” has been in the works since the show’s finale in 2014. Originally, a show titled “How I Met Your Dad” was pitched with Greta Gerwig in the lead role, and Meg Ryan serving as narrator. However, the show as never picked up by CBS.

But that didn’t stop show creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas from working on a spinoff. With the help of “This Is Us” co-showrunners Elizabeth Berger and Isaac Aptaker, the group began rewriting the spinoff. After years of work and adjustments, the group created “How I Met Your Father.”

The premise of “How I Met Your Father” follows the character of Sophie. Through a series of narrations, Sophie tell her son the story of how she met his father. Of course, much like the original, the spinoff will also includes Sophie’s group of friends as they navigate the challenges of life.

Hilary Duff will play Sophie in the new Hulu series. Duff says that she’s excited to step into the role of Sophie. The 33-year-old actress also says she’s a huge fan of “HIMYM” and is “honored and even a little nervous” about the sequel.

Although, Duff is excited about “How I Met Your Father,” fans have mixed reaction to the news. Duff fans are thrilled to see the “Lizzy McGuire” star back on television.

However, for fans of “HIMYM,” they’re less than thrilled with the news. “Why?” asked one Twitter commenter. Other commenters rehashed the ending of “HIMYM,” which they consider one of the worst finales in television history. Although, reaction to “How I Met Your Father” is split, some people said they’re willing to give the series a chance and wished Duff good luck.
