A sad announcement was released on April 9, 2021, informing the public of the Duke of Edinburgh’s demise. An official statement from the Queen was released on the same day, highlighting the date and time that the prince died.

Following his funeral, which took place today, April 17, 2021,  fans are looking back on his fondest moments as a husband, father and grandfather.

The Queen and Prince Philip met for the first time when they were teenagers. Although they were cousins, they didn’t know of each other’s existence until their parents came together for an event.

Philip was asked to escort Elizabeth and her sister somewhere and they became very close friends.

Over the next couple of months, they kept in touch by writing letters every chance they had. When Philip came of age, he summoned enough courage to ask King George VI for Elizabeth’s hand in marriage and his request was granted. 

At the time of their marriage, Elizabeth was a princess and was not supposed to sit on her father’s throne until many years later.

Before the wedding, Prince Philip was named a the Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich. The lovers later tied the knot on November 20, 1947. 

The wedding ceremony took place at Westminster Abbey, and there were 2000 guests present at the location. Per the family’s personal website, this wedding was also broadcasted to over 200 million people around the world. 

Two years before their wedding, the World War II ended and a lot of things were not the same in the country. However, that did not stop the happy couple from making that beautiful day count.

The Queen’s dress was gotten with ration coupons, but it’s still considered one of the most beautiful wedding dresses in worn by a royal bride.

The dress, which was styled by Norman Hartnell, was a silk ivory material, which had about 1000 pearls sewn on it. She also had a beautiful long veil behind her and a pearl necklace.

According to reports, the couple went to Bradlands, Hampshire after their wedding reception came to an end.

This place was owned by the Earl Mountbatten of Burma, who happened to be Prince Philip’s uncle. After a short period, they travelled to Scotland, to reside in the royal family’s estate 

This estate became a signature honeymoon location for the royal family as Prince Charles spent his honeymoon here, with both Princess Diana and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

In November 2020, the Queen and Prince celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary.
