JoJo Siwa Gets Candid About Going Public With Her Girlfriend

JoJo Siwa and Dakayla Wilson made things Instagram official last month, despite the former "Dance Moms" star previously saying she wanted to keep her dating life private.

The pair went public with their romance on August 14, when Siwa shared a video to her Instagram Stories of Wilson dancing in front of a mirror at a dance class. Mid-dance, Wilson casually dropped, “So I have a girlfriend," and just like that, the secret was out!

At the premiere of Hulu’s new docuseries "Child Star" — Demi Lovato’s directorial debut — JoJo Siwa and her girlfriend Dakayla Wilson dished about why they decided to go public with their relationship.

The couple looked all smiles on the red carpet as they talked about the big reveal, giving fans a closer look into their romance. It was the first time Siwa and Wilson opened up about their decision to make their love story Instagram official.

"Honestly I've been very open about not wanting to be public," Siwa told People Magazine. "And so when we kind of got together, it was just — it was literally one day where she was teaching a dance class and the girls in the class and the boys in the class were like, kind of looking at us. Then one was like, 'Why are you here, JoJo?' And finally I just came up to her and I was like, 'Yeah, why am I here?' "

She added, "And I gave her [Wilson] the look like, 'It's okay, you can say,' and then they were videoing that, and so we were like, 'You know what? It's public.' "

"Things change," Wilson chimed in.

In August, the former "Dance Moms" star took to Instagram where she couldn't hold back her excitement and gave her girlfriend a big hug. She captioned the post, “Cats outta the bag."

Wilson later reposted the moment, adding, “surprise shawtyyyyy.”

While the couple hasn’t spilled the details on how long they’ve been dating, the "Karma" singer followed up the reveal with a TikTok of herself busting a move. “Girlfriend taught a dance class so I took a weekend off of being JoJo Siwa and became her All Star Assistant,” she joked in the caption.

“@DAKAYLA WILSON broke my body in half for this but WORTH IT.”

Wilson told People that dancing is one of their favorite things to do together. "We like to dance a lot together," she saiid.

JoJo Siwa also spilled that the couple is all about a good game night, while she added that they love cozying up to watch movies and TV shows together, but ordering in is a must for the perfect chill night. "We don't cook for nothing," Siwa admitted.

In November 2023, JoJo Siwa opened up to People about the challenges of dating amid her hectic schedule. The star admitted that juggling romantic relationships with her busy life hasn’t been easy, revealing she’s struggled to find the right balance.

"I'm a lover. I crave that. But it’s good, because I know when I’m in a relationship, I prioritize it, and sometimes a little too much and I cut out friends, cut out family, cut out career, and I only focus on relationships," she admitted at the time.

In January, JoJo Siwa made headlines when she came out as LGBTQ through a series of TikTok and Instagram posts. Fans speculated about her sexuality when she lip-synced to Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" after spending the day with TikTok collective Pride House LA.

The speculation was confirmed with her bold "BEST GAY COUSIN EVER" t-shirt.

Siwa also gushed about her girlfriend at the time, Kylie Prew, saying, "She never cares what the internet says about us. It's nice to have somebody in my life like that."

"I still don't know what I am. It's like, I want to figure it out. And I have this joke. Her name is Kylie. And so I say that I'm Ky-sexual," she added. "But like, I don't know, bisexual, pansexual, queer, lesbian, gay, straight. I always just say gay because it just kind of covers it or queer because I think the keyword is cool."

The two have since split.
