Harvey Weinstein Is In Recovery After Surgery
The producer's representatives, Craig Rothfeld and Juda Engelmayer, confirmed that he was resting after the emergency surgery and was "weak." His reps confirmed that he indeed had a procedure and surgery on his heart, but they refused to provide any more information.
"As we have extensively stated before, Mr. Weinstein suffers a plethora of significant health issues that need ongoing treatment." the duo continued.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Weinstein's team expressed gratitude "to the executive team at the New York City Department of Correction and Rikers Island for acting swiftly in taking him to Bellevue Hospital.
Weinstein Was Awaiting A Retrial Before His Emergency Surgery
The Miramax CEO is spending time at Rikers Island as he awaits a retrial for his overturned April conviction in November.
Weinstein had a court appearance slated for Thursday in New York. He would reportedly face additional indictment in the rape case as a grand jury has been impaneled and presented with up to three previously uncharged allegations against him.
The former producer was also admitted in July after contracting COVID-19 and pneumonia. His lawyer, Arthur Aidala, confirmed that Weinstein was "suffering tremendously" from various statements.
His ailments reportedly included fluid in his heart and his lungs, spinal stenosis, macular degeneration in his eyes, and high blood sugars related to his diabetes and the high carbohydrate being served at Rikers Island.
The Producer Had A Pain In The Chest
The Blast reported that Weinstein's procedure became important when he incessantly complained of severe pain in the chest.
He was reportedly wheeled in for his last court appearance and even requested to stay at Riker prison since he was receiving medical attention there.
Aidala declared in April that Weinstein's health issues were a "train wreck," and he had been hospitalized in a Manhattan facility at that time.
Weinstein had been accused of sexual misconduct by over 80 women. However, the 72-year-old claimed he was innocent and that all his past sexual dealings were completely consensual.
Details Of Weinstein's 2020 Court 'Victory'
The highest court in New York cited prejudicial rulings during the #MeToo trial as the reason for overturning Weinstein's case.
The judge condemned the overturn as perpetuating outdated views on sexual violence as Weinstein's legal team argued that the trial was unfairly influenced.
Judge Madeline Singas accused the majority in the 4-3 ruling of "whitewashing the facts to conform to a he-said/she-said narrative."
She added that the Court of Appeal who meted the judgment be slammed for continuing a "disturbing trend of overturning juries guilty verdicts in cases involving sexual violence.
Singas claimed that the decision of the majority in the rape case sustained outdated notions of sexual violence that give predators a route to evade accountability.
Harvey Weinstein's Legal Team Spoke Up After The Overturn
Weinstein's attorney stated that they worked diligently to ensure that the producer achieved a "tremendous victory" for every criminal defendant in the state of New York.
Engelmayer, however, confirmed that they still had a long way to go because of their Los Angeles case. He continued that the victory would not stop them from "studying the ramifications of the appeal" ruling at that time.
The former producer still remained in custody despite the reversal to serve his 16-year conviction in Los Angeles in 2022 for a different rape case.
He has also been serving a 23-year sentence in a New York prison for engaging in a criminal sex act where he reportedly forced a TV and film production assistant to perform oral sex on him. Weinstein was also found guilty of third-degree rape for assaulting a budding actress in 2013
What fate awaits the 72-year-old as a new trial begins? Time will tell.
