Demi Lovato's Struggle With Drugs And Alcohol
Lovato has been open about her struggles with substance abuse throughout her life. Her battle with drugs and alcohol began in her teenage years, which was only worsened by the pressures of fame and personal challenges.
She previously spoke about her first stint in rehab in 2010, after struggling with bulimia, self-harm, and addiction.
In 2018, Lovato experienced a near-fatal overdose from a drug relapse, which she has described as a pivotal moment in her life. The overdose led to a lengthy hospital stay and subsequent rehabilitation but she has since used her platform to raise awareness about addiction and mental health, advocating for support and understanding for those struggling with similar issues.
Demi Lovato Once Performed Hungover
In her raw documentary, "Simply Complicated," which debuted in October 2017, Lovato admitted that she performed on "American Idol" while dealing with a hangover.
“I would fake my drug tests with other people’s pee. It’s embarrassing to look back on the person that I was,” the actress revealed. “The very last night that I drank, I was at a hotel and I invited two random people and basically just drank with them. I got really, really drunk until it was time to get on a flight."
"And I was so drunk that I threw up in the back of the car service on the way to the airport to perform on 'American Idol.' I felt like that was a moment in my career where I didn’t care," she added. "I just knew that I needed to get high to get through what I was going through at that point.”
Demi Lovato's 'Child Star' Docuseries To Debut In September
Lovato, who kicked off their career at just six years old and became a Disney Channel staple during their teen years, is joining forces with other former child stars for their upcoming documentary, "Child Star."
“I think I’d passed the threshold of what I could withstand emotionally and physically," they told The Hollywood Reporter, recalling their response to growing up in the spotlight. “And I didn’t realize that child stardom could be traumatic — and it isn’t traumatic for everyone, but for me, it was.”
“I think about people in the wardrobe department on my TV show because I’d go in there in bad moods all the time, and I worry about guest stars that came on or the other actors or the people during 'Camp Rock 2,'” Lovato added. “And it’s easy to excuse that behavior because I was so young and in so much pain, but I’m really remorseful, and that’s a guilt that stays with you forever.”
"Child Star" will be available to stream on Hulu on September 17.
