Convicted 'Rust' Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed To Reach Plea Deal On Separate Gun Charge

Even though Alec Baldwin's legal troubles may be over, convicted "Rust" armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is still facing more charges unrelated to the shooting on the set of the Western film.
Both the "30 Rock" actor and the rookie armorer were charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the October 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. However, charges against Baldwin were dismissed with prejudice in July after the judge concluded that the prosecution had worked with law enforcement officials to bury evidence that could have been beneficial to Baldwin's case.
In March, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to the state maximum of 18 months behind bars. However, she is also expected to plead guilty to a separate felony gun charge that took place weeks before the fatal shooting.
Convicted Armorer Is Facing Felony Gun Charges From Weeks Before 'Rust' Shooting
It may have taken a jury less than three hours to find Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty of involuntary manslaughter, but that is not the only time that she has been accused of acting recklessly with a firearm. Last year, a grand jury indicted the 27-year-old armorer on a felony charge of bringing a firearm on bringing a firearm into a bar in New Mexico on October 1, 2021. This would have taken place exactly twenty days before Halyna Hutchins was killed on set on October 21, 2021.
On Wednesday, a court filing obtained by People magazine stated that "the State of New Mexico and Defendant have reached a plea agreement." According to her lawyer, Jason Bowles, Gutierrez-Reed has agreed to serve 18 months of probation as part of her plea agreement.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed Was Planning On Fighting The Gun Charges
It looks like Hannah Gutierrez-Reed managed to reach a plea agreement with the state only days before her hearing with the First Judicial District Court of New Mexico, which was scheduled to take place on Thursday, September 5. Although her legal team originally planned on fighting the charges, it looks like they have agreed to probation to avoid the possibility of another long trial.
Previous court documents filed by prosecutors on April 12 show a video of Hannah Gutierrez-Reed entering a bar on October 1, 2021. The footage appears to show the armorer, who only worked on one film set before "Rust," showing off a gun that she had hidden from security on her way in.
“Upon successfully circumventing the security at the bar she went into the restroom and made a selfie video stating, ‘They checked my purse, but they didn’t check my butt cheeks! ‘Wah wah wah,’ ” those court documents stated. “At the same time that she was speaking, she held up a nickel-plated semi-automatic pistol in front of the camera.”
'Rust' Armorer's Lawyers Want Her Released From Prison
After Alec Baldwin's trial was dismissed in July, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed's legal team has asked for the "Rust" armorer to be released from prison. They are also asking for her conviction to be dismissed or for a new trial to be held in light of the misconduct that special prosecutor Kari T. Morrissey is accused of.
On Tuesday, July 16, Gutierrez-Reed's attorneys Jason Bowles and Monica L. Barreras filed a motion asking for Gutierrez-Reed to receive a new trial or to have her conviction dismissed in the wake of "an egregious discovery violation" made by Morrissey after it was revealed that she had worked with law enforcement to file important evidence under a new case number. This evidence - bullets turned over by a friend of Hannah Gutierrez-Reed's father, veteran armorer Thell Reed - was never revealed to Baldwin's defense team until during the trial.
Hannah Gutierrez-Reed's Lawyers Claim Prosecutors 'Withheld Bombshell' Evidence
According to the July filing, Gutierrez-Reed's attorneys argued that prosecutors "withheld bombshell exculpatory evidence that it had a constitutional obligation to disclose and that would have resulted in a fundamentally different trial," for the armorer, who was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in less than three hours.
Given the new evidence that has surfaced, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed's legal team is fighting for her to get a new trial. They want her convicted dismissed or a new trial to be held with another prosecutor, essentially removing Kari Morrissey from the case. They also want her released from prison during this time.
Legal Expert Weighs In On Possibility Of 'Rust' Armorer Getting A New Trial
Even though the new evidence changed the outcome of Baldwin's case, legal expert and former Los Angeles district attorney Emily D. Baker does not think that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed will get her charges dropped, telling People magazine that she "is in a much different position" to have her case dismissed or to receive a new trial.
"With the swiftness of that conviction and the evidence, including Hannah's own statements to police that she loaded the weapon, I don't know if any of this coming forward would change the jury result that she didn't do her job as the armorer," Baker explained. "The position of Baldwin was much stronger. Hannah's position to get released and to get this overturned is not as good as Baldwin's. It's a much weaker argument for her."
Meanwhile, props supplier Seth Kenney has finally broken his silence on the new ammunition that surfaced during Baldwin's trial.
