Sebastian Stan, known for his role as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is set to portray a young Donald Trump in the upcoming film "The Apprentice," penned by Gabriel Sherman.
Donald Trump, who originally hosted "The Apprentice" from 2004 to 2017 and appeared on its spin-off "The Celebrity Apprentice" until 2015, was dismissed by NBC due to controversial remarks he made about immigrants during his 2016 presidential campaign.
The new film, "The Apprentice," will explore Donald Trump, played by Sebastian Stan, and his efforts to establish his real estate empire in New York City during the 1970s and 1980s.
Sebastian Stan Portrays Young Donald Trump In Upcoming Film
On Tuesday, September 3, Briarcliff Entertainment released a clip from the upcoming film that features Sebastian Stan portraying a younger version of the former president.
In the scene shared on its YouTube page, Stan's Trump is seen alongside Jeremy Strong, who plays Trump’s attorney and advisor Roy Cohn. The two are in the back of a car, handling a call from a reporter wanting to interview Trump.
As Cohn hands over the phone, he advises Trump to emphasize his ideas and quotes to the journalist.
The upcoming film will “examine Trump’s efforts to build his real estate business in New York in the ’70s and ’80s, also digging into his relationship with infamous attorney Roy Cohn,” per Deadline.
New Preview Clip Gives Glimpse Of Sebastian Stan As Young Donald Trump
"The Apprentice," written by Gabriel Sherman and directed by Ali Abbasi, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and has received controversial reviews ever since.
The film, which provides a provocative look at a younger Trump in the '70s, includes a controversial scene featuring Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of Trump in a distressing moment with Ivana, played by Maria Bakalova.
In her 1990 divorce deposition, Ivana detailed a similar incident, initially characterizing it as rape. “On one occasion during 1989, Mr. Trump and I had marital relations in which he behaved very differently towards me than he had during our marriage," she said, per The Guardian. "As a woman, I felt violated … I referred to this as a rape, but I do not want my words to be interpreted in a literal or criminal sense.”
Trump Campaign Threatens Lawsuit
Steven Cheung, communications director for the Trump campaign, issued a statement, per People Magazine, following the film's premiere. "We will be filing a lawsuit to address the blatantly false assertions from these pretend filmmakers," he said.
"This garbage is pure fiction which sensationalizes lies that have been long debunked," Cheung added, referring to the rape scene. "This 'film' is pure malicious defamation, should not see the light of day, and doesn’t even deserve a place in the straight-to-DVD section of a bargain bin at a soon-to-be-closed discount movie store. It belongs in a dumpster fire."
'The Apprentice' Filmmaker Fires Back
Despite the potential threat of legal action from Trump's campaign, director Ali Abbasi seemed unfazed. "I mean, everybody talks about him suing a lot of people — they don't talk about his success rate, though, you know?" Abbasi said, per People Magazine, adding that he doesn't "necessarily think this is a movie that he would dislike."
"I don't necessarily think he would like it. I think he would be surprised," Abbasi said at the time. "Like I said before, I would be happy — I would offer to go and meet him wherever he wants and talk about the context of the movie, have a screening and have a chat afterwards, if that's interesting for anyone of Trump campaign people here."
Fans React To The New 'The Apprentice' Clip
The new clip has received nearly 10,000 views and several comments, including one that reads, "It's great to see Jeremy Strong back with some killer acting."
"Good lord, he has Trump's speech down, pat God dang," another said.
"Stan & Strong will both get Oscar nominations for this. I’m so happy they’re releasing this film," a third expressed.
According to Briarcliff Entertainment, the movie shows, "A young Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan), eager to make his name as a hungry scion of a wealthy family in 1970s New York, comes under the spell of Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), the cutthroat attorney who would help create the Donald Trump we know today. Cohn sees in Trump the perfect protégé—someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win."
"The Apprentice" will hit theaters on October 11.
