Joey Chestnut Shares Thoughts On Returning To Nathan's Hot Dog Contest Following Ban

Joey Chestnut was banned from this year’s Fourth of July Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest after striking a deal with Impossible Foods, a vegan company that recently launched a plant-based hot dog.

Chestnut didn’t waste time speaking out after the news hit, calling the decision “very disappointing" in a social media post.

But even after being banned, it looks like Joey Chestnut isn’t holding a grudge as he’s already said he’d be more than happy to make a comeback at the annual event.

When asked if he’d consider a return to the competition, 40-year-old Chestnut told Us Weekly he “absolutely” would.

“They have to be reasonable,” he told the outlet at Netflix’s "Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef" press conference. “I’d love to go back because this year I have to eat hot dogs without dunking … I have a hybrid method of dunking and not dunking. Because I think this contest has made me even better.”

“By all my old agreements, I should have been able to work with Impossible Foods, and they changed the agreement this year,” he explained, referring to his recent deal with the vegan food company and his agreement with Major League Eating.

Earlier this year, the company revealed that it had banned the champ from competing in this year's event.

"We are devastated to learn that Joey Chestnut has chosen to represent a rival brand that sells plant-based hot dogs rather than competing in the 2024 Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest," Major League Eating said in a statement earlier this year.

"MLE and Nathan’s went to great lengths to accommodate Joey and his management team, agreeing to the appearance fee and allowing Joey to compete in a rival, unbranded hot dog eating contest on Labor Day."

The statement came after Chestnut made a deal with Impossible Foods, a vegan company that recently launched a plant-based vegan dog. "For nearly two decades, we have worked under the same basic hot dog exclusivity provisions," the MLE added. "However, it seems that Joey and his managers have prioritized a new partnership with a different brand over our long-time relationship."

"We love Joey and support him in any contest he chooses," an Impossible Foods spokesperson told People Magazine after the news broke. "It's OK to experiment with a new dog. Meat eaters shouldn't have to be exclusive to just one wiener."

After the news, Chestnut broke his silence, claiming, "We have worked under the same basic hot dog exclusivity provisions for nearly two decades. However, it seems that Joey and his managers have prioritized a new partnership with a different hot dog brand over our long-time relationship."

“To set the record straight, I do not have a contract with MLE or Nathan's and they are looking to change the rules from past years as it relates to other partners I can work with,” Chestnut added in his statement. "This is apparently the basis on which I’m being banned, and it doesn’t impact the July 4th contest.”

"Sadly, this is the decision Nathan's and Major League Eating are making and it will deprive the great fans of the holiday’s usual joy and entertainment. To my fans, I love you and appreciate you," he added. "Rest assured that you’ll see me eat again soon. Stay tuned and STAY HUNGRY!"

As reported by the New York Post, Chestnut received $200,000 to participate in the 2023 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Competition and was offered a four-year contract worth $1.2 million to keep competing in the event, prior to his ban.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that the 16-time hot dog-eating champion, Chestnut, would face off against six-time champion Takeru Kobayashi in a Netflix special. This marks the first time Chestnut and Kobayashi have competed against each other in 15 years.

Before the matchup, Chestnut told Us Weekly that going up against 46-year-old Kobayashi pushes him to be a better competitor and to “hit numbers that are pretty impressive.” Chestnut also said, “I’m going to do my best, and I’m hoping that I’ll come out on top.”

Joey Chestnut won 83 to 67.
