Minaj and her husband are at the center of controversy regarding his use of a gay slur during her TikTok Live event on Friday evening.

While talking with fans, Minaj sat with her husband behind her and said, "Don't you let anybody or anything steal your motherf-cking joy."

To buttress his wife's point, Petty smiled and said, "That's right, especially little f-ggots or f-ck boys."

However, this comment did not sit well with fans on social media, and it quickly became a topic on X ( formerly Twitter). Many fans called out Petty for using the derogatory term that refers to homosexual men.

A fan wrote, "Why did he unnecessarily attack them lmao. Like he's trying to be extra masculine and prove he's not gay."

Nicki Minaj Was Dragged Online For Not Correcting Him

Minaj wasn't spared from the hot seat as many fans criticized her for not defending her massive LGBTQ+ fan base and correcting Petty's use of the derogatory term.

Some insisted that it showed that the "Starships" rapper doesn't really care about her fans, popularly known as Barbz.

One fan tweeted, "This is the second time he has said this around her, and she didn't correct him. Her fandom is mostly gay men smh."

A similar comment read, "Nicki Minaj has never been silent on anything. Why shut up now when it's time to make a difference?"

Netizens also attacked Petty's troubled past, with one writing, "He ain't complaining when the same gays are paying his court fees and funding his [wife's] lifestyle."

Due to his recent use of a gay slur, Petty's history of breaking the law became a hot topic on X.

His most recent legal trouble occurred in September 2023, when he was sentenced to 120 days of home detention. At the time, he violated the rules of his probation by threatening rapper Offset on social media.

Petty's probation was part of his sentence for failing to register as a sex offender when he married Minaj and moved to California in 2019. He was sentenced to three years of probation, one year of home detention, and a fine of $55,000.

Petty's rap sheet also goes as far back as 1995, when he was convicted of attempted rape in the first degree against a 16-year-old girl, which happened the year before.

Petty and Minaj married in 2019, but they've known each other for much longer. The couple first met during high school at New York City's LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts.

During a December 2023 interview with Vogue, Minaj revealed that she was drawn to Petty because he didn't care about her fame and success.

She said, "Because I've known my husband for so long, there's an ease we have with each other. We make each other laugh. We're silly. And we're always reminiscing about some old story.

The "Barbie World" rapper explained that she worried that men would only like her because of her fame.

In March, court documents obtained by The Blast showed that Minaj and Petty had been ordered to pay $500,000 in settlement to a bodyguard.

The couple was sued by a former bodyguard of Minaj, who alleged that Petty assaulted him after the rapper's concert in Frankfurt, Germany, back in 2019.

The bodyguard, identified as Thomas Weidenmuller, claimed in his lawsuit that Petty punched him in the face and sued the pair for $750,000, citing battery and infliction of emotional distress.
