Double tragedy! Mariah Carey demands privacy from fans over the loss of her mother, Patricia, and sister, Alison.
The pop star announced the death of her mother and sister, which occurred over the weekend, and expressed heartbreak over the unfortunate incident.
No further details concerning the passing of Mariah Carey's mother and sister have been shared, including the cause of their deaths.
Mariah Carey Released A Statement Confirming The Loss
The 55-year-old announced the news of her mom and sister's passing in a statement detailing that the tragic incident occurred over the weekend.
"My heart is broken that I've lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day," the R&B singer shared.
She disclosed that she was able to spend the last week of her mom's life with her and extended her appreciation to everyone for their "love and support and respect" for her privacy "during this impossible time."
According to PEOPLE, Mariah did not reveal any more information on the tragedy that took two members of her family at once.
Mariah and Patricia Had A Complicated Relationship
The late Patricia was previously married to Mariah's dad, Alfred Roy Carey. She was a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach. The ex-couple welcomed their children Alison, Mariah, and son Morgan but went their separate ways when Mariah was only three years old.
However, Mariah's relationship with her mother was complex throughout her life despite their shared vocal talent and love for music. The mom-of-two described the relationship in her 2020 memoir, "The Meaning of Mariah Carey". She wrote:
"Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It's never been only black-and-white — it's been a whole rainbow of emotions."
The 55-year-old explained that their relationship was a "prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration, and disappointment," as she concluded that "a complicated love tethers my heart to my mother's."
However, Mariah and Patricia took a break from the intricacies of their relationship in 2010 to come together for ABC's "Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You" special.
The pair performed the soulful duet of "O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus." She also dedicated her memoir in part to her now-late mother, writing:
"And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always."
The Singer Was Dragged To Court By Her Sister Over The Memoir
The legend’s relationship with her siblings was also imbalanced. In her memoir, she shared that it was “emotionally and physically safer” for her to avoid any contact with Alison or Morgan.
In 2021, Variety reported that Alison sued the singer in the New York County Supreme Court over her statements in the memoir that shed light on their contentious and deeply estranged relationship.
In the suit, Alison demanded a minimum of $1.25 million for the "infliction of immense emotional distress caused by defendant's heartless, vicious, vindictive, despicable and totally unnecessary public humiliation of defendant’s already profoundly damaged older sister."
The suit continued that Mariah proceeded to publish terrible words about Alison without giving her the opportunity to respond.
Alison also accused the Grammy winner of using her status as a public figure to attack her and generate sensational headlines to promote the sales of her book, adding that she was devastated by the allegations.
Mariah Accused Alison Of Failing To 'Protect' Her In The Memoir
The singer detailed her childhood struggles, including growing up as an interracial kid, feeling neglected as the child of divorced parents, and a "Dandelion Tea" incident involving her and Alison.
Mariah disclosed that Alison left her in the company of a boyfriend who made sexual advances at her when they were left alone together, declaring that "big sisters are supposed to protect you, not pimp you out."
She also recalled the playful moment that turned scary when Alison threw boiling hot tea on her, leaving her with third-degree burns. "She burned my back and my trust. Any faint hope I'd help up to that point of having a big sister became scorched earth," wrote the singer.
The TV personality also shared that Alison drugged her with Valium and gave her a pinky nail full of cocaine while she was just 12 years old.
Mariah Carey's 7-Year-Old Relationship Hit The Rocks Last Year
The singer seemingly ended her relationship with her partner of seven years and backup dancer Bryan Tanaka last year. The Blast shared that Tanaka was absent from her "Merry Christmas One and All" tour, which began in mid-November of last year.
A source close to the mother-of-two also disclosed that she was celebrating the holidays in Aspen without the 44-year-old, who was a regular company on her previous getaways.
Mariah also fueled breakup speculations when she posted two images of herself on social media: one of her mid-performance on stage and another of her in a dressing room.
May Mariah Carey find the strength to navigate this difficult time, thoughts and prayers are with her!
