Carpenter recently spoke to Zane Lowe on "Apple Music 1" about her new album, telling him and fans, “I feel a thread running through this album of not just self-discovery, but also getting through the heartache and heartbreak that can often."

"Man, it can really break you for a long time,” she continued. “And I get the feeling, even with the humor and with a healthy dose of judgment in some of these songs, that you were hurting real bad.”

She also spoke to Variety, telling the outlet, “It’s my second ‘big girl’ album. It’s a companion, but it’s not the same. When it comes to having full creative control and being a full-fledged adult, I would consider this a sophomore album.”

A handful of fans named "Sharpest Tool," which some believe is about Carpenter's rumored boyfriend, Shawn Mendes. "We never talk about how you / Found God at your ex's house, always / Made sure that the phone was face-down / Seems like overnight, I'm just the b-tch you hate now," the lyrics go, seemingly targeting an ex for rekindling a past romance.

Some believe this might be a jab at Mendes, who was spotted kissing Camila Cabello in April 2023, only two months after Carpenter was rumored to have been spending time with Mendes.

In addition to her new album, Carpenter dropped a music video for her track "Taste," featuring Jenna Ortega from "Wednesday."

In the video, Carpenter plots revenge on her ex—played by "Halloween" actor Rohan Campbell—for moving on with Ortega. The storyline sees Carpenter stalking Ortega and sneaking into her home with murderous intent, inspired by the lyrics, “You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissing you.” Some think this is also a reference to her love triangle with Mendes and Cabello.

Ahead of her album's release, Carpenter sat down with Apple Music to discuss the popularity of "Espresso" and how it came to be. "This was one of those times in my life where it was just like, I just thought I was the sh-t in the moment," she said. "And I think you don't always feel that way, so you kind of have to capture those moments that you do because that's how you find those little."

"There was something really exciting about the fact that there was so much personality throughout the entire song because those are the ones that are really, really fun to sing live with a crowd," she added. "Those are the ones that people, I think when they don't know my music or who I am or anything, they can just tune in to a single song and kind of leave with a better idea of my sense of humor."
