Carter’s episode with Melissa began in 2022 when Shannon Ruth sued him in Nevada for an alleged assault on a tour bus in 2001. Melissa then followed with her own lawsuit filed in California, accusing the singer of an alleged sexual assault at an apartment in 2002.

She then filed a police report in 2017, but no charges were filed against the singer. The lawsuits prompted Carter to take action and file his lawsuit against Shannon, Melissa, and her father in a Las Vegas court.

The star accused Melissa and her father of coaching Shannon to make false allegations against him in a bid to draw out a large settlement. Carter denied all allegations of sexual assault or any abuse against both women and demanded $2 million in damages for the Nevada case.

The 44-year-old then pled with the court to pause Melissa’s lawsuit, which was filed in Los Angeles, until the outcome of his Las Vegas filing. Carter’s motion to put the case on hold was dismissed by the judge, and now he has filed a second countersuit against Melissa, per In Touch.

Carter Explained His Side Of The Story In The Lawsuit

The singer filed the second countersuit as part of the pending case in Los Angeles. He disclosed that he met Melissa in 2003 on a television movie set.

Carter said they then proceeded to drink and play video games at his apartment. He claimed they were "flirtatious with one another throughout the day/night."

He added that his friend and Melissa's friend accompanied them to his apartment, and they all went into the bedroom, where he and Melissa had consensual sex.

After their romp, Carter stated that they fell asleep beside each other. When the party of four woke up, they left the apartment together and walked out to the parking garage.

He reiterated that no sexual assault happened, and Melissa was even excited to perform a musical duet with him and a live showcase after their sexual encounter.

Carter told the court that Melissa was a member of the pop girl group Dream, which was active from 1998 to 2003. After that, she struggled to stay relevant.

He also spoke on Melissa's accusation in November 2017, where she declared to a blog that the singer publicly raped her in 2003.

The Singer Accused Melissa And Her Father Of Defamation

Carter further claimed that Melissa appeared on Dr. Oz and countless interviews, including a 2024 documentary titled "Fallen Idols: Nick and Aaron Carter," to accuse him of sexual assault.

He noted that Melissa aided the producers of the 2024 documentary depicting him as a rapist by appearing in the project. Carter's lawyer further stated:

"In addition to publishing the defamatory statements to the world on social media and through other mediums, [Melissa] also copied or "tagged" many of her own and others' defamatory statements directly to third parties that are either involved with or have influence over [Nick's] prospective business opportunities, advantages and contracts."

The Backstreet Boys star declared that Melissa's lies cost him a $350,000 deal with MeUndies, a $1 million deal with Vrbo, and an endorsement deal with Roblox worth a huge amount of money in publicity.

He also lost a brand partnership with The Children's Place totaling $125,000 and an endorsement with Tonies, a children's product company that would have been worth hundreds of thousands in revenue.

Carter also demanded $2.5 million in damages, punitive damages, and attorney fees in addition to his therapist's claims that the singer suffered from PTSD due to the false claims.

Shannon Claimed Carter Assaulted Her At The Age Of 17

In January, The Blast reported that Shannon filed her lawsuit against the star in December 2022, with claims that the abuse occurred when she was only 17.

In her statement, Shannon stated that the "last 21 years have been filled with pain, confusion, frustration, shame, and self-harm" that are a direct result of Nick Carter's abuse.

"Even though I'm autistic and live with cerebral palsy, I believe that nothing has affected me more or had a more lasting impact on my life than what Nick Carter did and said to me," as she noted that the singer also addressed her with defamatory slurs.

Shannon disclosed that it took her years to come forward with her story due to fear of going to jail, but it was important for her to speak up and stop him "from assaulting more teens and women."

However, Carter's legal team denied Shannon's account and claimed she was "manipulated into making false allegations about Nick - and those allegations have changed repeatedly and materially over time."

Geri Smith, who has worked with the artist as his therapist for a while, signed a declaration of support for Carter in April. The Blast reported that the family and marriage therapist penned down a candid account of how the assault allegations had affected Carter's life.

"I had a therapy session with Mr. Carter, and I learned that a woman from his past, Melissa Schuman, had recently accused him of sexual assault," shared Smith as she detailed their meeting on November 28, 2017.

Smith revealed that Carter was "extremely shaken and vehemently denied the allegations and how Ms. Schuman was trying to portray him as a sexual predator."

She then declared in her final verdict after multiple counseling sessions from December 2017 that she observed "Ms. Schuman's public accusations of sexual assault had severely and negatively impacted Mr. Carter's mental health, physical health, and overall well-being."

Smith noted that their time together only showed Carter's best parts and desire for justice despite the heavy sexual assault allegations.

Carter is currently rounding up a 28-day European summer tour, but will he also be smiling to the bank with these lump sum demands?
