Hollywood power couple Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are officially ending their marriage after two years. The actress finally made the move to separate from her husband legally.
Split rumors plagued the duo's marriage since March, as they had not been seen together for a long time. But after months of speculation, Lopez finally made it official to end their marriage.
The news of their divorce comes a month after Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck publicly listed their Beverly Hills marital mansion for sale.
Jennifer Lopez Files For Divorce From Ben Affleck
According to TMZ, Lopez has made the move to divorce Affleck after being married for just two years.
The singer filed the legal documents at the L.A. County Superior Court on Tuesday "pro per." This means Lopez filed the lawsuit herself without an attorney.
Lopez also listed the date of their split as April 26, 2024. However, Lopez's filing for divorce on August 20 is worth noting, as she and Affleck had their second wedding ceremony in Georgia on this very day.
In the legal documents obtained by the news outlet, Lopez did not specify whether she and Affleck had a prenuptial agreement, and sources close to the situation claim that the couple never had a prenup.
Affleck and Lopez do not have kids together, so child support will likely not be a bone of contention in their divorce.
The "Ain't Your Mama" singer has also waived spousal support and has asked the court to deny Affleck such a request.
The estranged couple's romance is one of the most talked about in Hollywood. Their first attempt at a relationship in 2002, after meeting on the set of the film "Gigli," ended with a canceled engagement and a split in 2004, partly due to media scrutiny.
Years after being married to other people and having kids, Lopez and Affleck rekindled their romance in 2021 and eventually got married the next year, in July 2022, in an intimate ceremony in Las Vegas.
However, they held a more elaborate and lavish wedding in August at the actor's 87-acre compound outside Savannah, Georgia.
After their wedding, the couple jointly purchased a $60 million Beverly Hills mansion in 2023. But, early this year, Lopez and Affleck's relationship became plagued with split rumors due to their reduced sightings together.
Affleck made no appearances to support Lopez's TV projects, and he notably missed the 2024 Met Gala, where she was a co-chair. Things then took a turn for the worse when it was reported that he had moved out of their shared home.
The Couple Is Trying To Sell Their Marital Mansion
Rumors of the couple's divorce intensified after Affleck and Lopez publicly listed their recently renovated 12-bedroom, 24-bathroom estate for $68 million.
The 38,000-square-foot property boasts numerous recent upgrades and improvements made over the past four months.
Though Affleck and Lopez initially tried to sell the mansion discreetly, they eventually put it on the public market.
Affleck and Lopez, who got married in 2022, bought the Beverly Hills mansion in 2023 for just over $60 million after more than two years of searching.
Aside from their marital troubles, an insider told People magazine that Affleck and Lopez didn't like the mansion because of its distance from his kids and its huge size.
"Ben never liked the house. It's too far away from his kids," a source close to Lopez shared, adding that the "Love Don't Cost A Thing" singer also thought that "the house is way too big for her.
Ben Affleck's Buying A Home On Jennifer Lopez's Birthday Was The 'Final Insult'
The "Argo" actor has since purchased a property in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles for $20.5 million.
The new mansion boasts five bedrooms and six bathrooms, breakfast and dining areas, a separate family room, a den, walk-in closets, a media room, a powder room, and a guest house.
Prior to his new purchase, Affleck had been staying at a $100-a-month Brentwood home near his ex-wife, Jennifer Garner, after moving out of his and Lopez's marital home.
Affleck also reportedly bought his new mansion on the same day as Lopez's birthday, with a source telling Radar Online that the move was an "insult" to the singer.
"Ben's decision to move into his own home is the final insult," the source said. "JLO had been holding onto hope that there could be a reconciliation if they were to spend some time apart, but this is like a stab in the heart."
Ben Affleck And Jennifer Lopez Were Trying To Save Their Marriage
Rumors of marital woes began swirling after Affleck and Lopez were noticed to be spending less time together than they once did.
The couple even spent time apart on several special days, like their second wedding anniversary and the July 4th holidays. Affleck also snubbed his wife's "Bridgerton"-themed Hamptons birthday bash.
Despite these occurrences, sources claimed that the pair were still trying to work on their marriage by taking some time apart.
"Jen and Ben agreed it is best to take some time apart so they can really figure out what it is that they want," a source told the Daily Mail.
"They were ready to throw in the towel. Divorce papers are done and ready to be filed. But they wanted to give it one last go before walking away from this and are going back to the beginning by writing each other letters. This is what made them fall in love in the first place," the source added.
Jennifer Lopez's Family Allegedly Told Her To Cut Her Losses
Lopez's family members were also reportedly in support of her ending her marriage with Affleck, as they felt the actress had "wasted years" on the "Gone Girl" star.
Guadalupe Rodriguez, Lopez's mother, allegedly advised her daughter "to cut her losses" and move on.
"Jennifer's mom told her, 'Cut your losses and move on to avoid getting any deeper in this mess,'" an insider said, per the Daily Mail.
According to the source, Rodriguez also said Lopez has "wasted years believing that Ben was some kind of knight in shining armor, seemingly referencing her daughter's decision to marry Affleck after their first failed engagement.
The insider added, "He was not the person she built him up to be. It's taken too much of a toll on her, and because of this, she has lost sight of who she is and what she stands for."
