After dating for several years, William and Kate's relationship reportedly experienced a make-or-break moment as she approached her 25th birthday in January 2007.

William had canceled plans to attend a New Year's gathering with her amid media speculation of a royal engagement.

The unexpected cancellation made Kate suspect something more was happening, and her intuition proved correct when William broke up with her soon afterward during a 30-minute phone call.

According to the Daily Mail, an excerpt from Robert Johnson's book on Kate revealed William explained that they both needed "a bit of space" to "find our own way." The call concluded with both agreeing they were on "different pages."

Upon her return, she often went out to nightclubs, dressed in bolder outfits and high heels, making a statement with her newfound confidence.

Meanwhile, William, who was serving as an army officer, couldn't avoid the media coverage that highlighted Kate's activities, reminding him of what he had lost.

As fate would have it, a mutual friend organized a "Freaky Naughty" themed party and invited both William and Kate.

It's unclear if they knew each other would be there, but being in close proximity was the sign they needed to see that they were still into each other.
