Two members of Congress are calling for a hearing to examine conservatorships in the court system, citing Britney Spears as an example of a situation where “questionable motives and legal tactics” were used to gain control of the pop star’s life.
House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jim Jordan and Representative Matt Gaetz formally requested the chairman schedule a hearing to examine the potential problems with unjust conservatorships. In a letter, posted on Twitter, they say in recent years there has been “growing public concern” about stripping the individual of their personal freedoms by “manipulation of the court.”
The letter cites the “most striking example” is that of Britney Spears and goes on to question the motives of her father, Jamie Spears.

“Since 2008, Ms. Spears has been under a court-ordered conservatorship. The facts and circumstances giving rise to this arrangement remain in dispute but involve questionable motives and legal tactics by her father and now-conservator, Jamie Spears,” the letter states.
It continues, “In court appearances in August and November of 2020, Ms. Spears’ attorney represented to the court that Ms. Spears “strongly opposed” having her father as a conservator, that she was afraid of her father, and that she would not again perform publicly so long as this arrangement persisted. Despite these pleas, Mr. Spears remains a conservator of her estate.”
As we reported, Britney’s situation has come under new scrutiny after a documentary (Framing Britney Spears) examined the major players in the case.

“Despite Mr. Spears’s claiming to want nothing more than to see Ms. Spears “not need a conservatorship,” his attorney admitted in a recent documentary, “Of the cases I’ve been involved in, I have not seen a conservatee who has successfully terminated a conservatorship,” the letter continued.
The scathing letter gives other examples of similar situations, where they believe a conservatorship was put in place which was unjust.
“Ms. Spears is not alone,” it says. Adding, “There are countless other Americans unjustly stripped of their freedoms by others with little recourse.”

In the end, the two Congressmen are asking to schedule a hearing where the issue can be discussed formally.
“Given the constitutional freedoms at stake and opaqueness of these arrangements, it is incumbent upon our Committee to convene a hearing to examine whether Americans are trapped unjustly in conservatorships. We look forward to hearing from you on this important issue,” the letter concludes.
As we reported, Britney is still fighting in an L.A. County Court over the conservatorship — including issues removing her father as the sole conservator of her estate. It should be noted, so far, Britney has not requested to end the conservatorship.
