President Joe Biden finally addressed the nation from the White House one week after testing positive for COVID-19 and three days after announcing he would no longer run for re-election.
As The Blast previously reported, the President of the United States posted a letter on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, announcing his resignation from the 2024 Presidential race, though he did confirm he will complete his current presidential term.
While Vice President Kamala Harris appeared publicly on Monday, Joe Biden called in virtually from his home as he was reportedly in isolation.
Americans Question 'Where Is Joe Biden?'
On Monday night, Kamala Harris delivered a national address, though the President of the United States was absent. The President had been MIA for nearly a week, and there was increasing concern and speculation regarding his location.
"Joe Biden was reportedly last seen in public on July 17. That's when he was 'diagnosed with COVID-19' and was told to self-isolate in Delaware for a week. It was also days after the Trump shooting," one user asked on social media. "America demands to know: WHERE IS JOE?"
"Where is Joe Biden? The American people deserve to hear from him directly that he is dropping out of the 2024 Presidential Election," another X user said in a post. "Not from a staff member posting a letter on X using unofficial letterhead with a questionable signature."
However, those conspiracy theories are now put to rest as President Joe Biden has officially made his first public address since testing positive for COVID-19 on July 17 and since announcing his resignation from the 2024 presidential run on Sunday.
Joe Biden Dials In To Offer Support For Kamala Harris
Before making his first public appearance since announcing his removal from the presidential run, he dialed in while Kamala Harris was addressing the nation on Monday to offer his support to Harris.
“The name has changed at the top of the ticket, but the mission hasn’t changed at all,” Biden said via video chat.
He then promised he was “not going anywhere” and plans to campaign on Harris’ behalf. "I’m watching you, kid. I love you," he said of Harris.
Joe Biden Makes First Public Address Since Resigning From Re-Election
On Tuesday, 48 hours after President Joe Biden announced he would be stepping out of the presidential race, he tested negative for COVID-19 and immediately traveled to D.C. on Air Force One.
Per his resignation letter, Biden said he "believes it is in the interest of my party and the country to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president."
“Let me express my heartfelt appreciation to the American people for the faith and trust you have placed in me,” he added. “I believe today what I always have: that there is nothing America can't do - when we do it together. We just have to remember we are the United States of America."
What Did Joe Biden Have To Say In His First Address Since Testing Positive For COVID-19?
On Wednesday, in a live televised address from the Oval Office, President Joe Biden said, “In this sacred space, I’m surrounded by portraits extraordinary American presidents. Thomas Jefferson wrote the immortal words that guide this nation. George Washington showed us presidents are not kings. Abraham Lincoln, who implored us to reject malice, Franklin Roosevelt, who inspired us to reject fear. I revere this office, but I love my country more."
"It's been an honor of my life to serve as your president," he later added. "I know you, the American people, and I know this: we are a great nation because we are good people."
"I promise to always level with you and to always tell the truth," Biden continued. "There is a time and a place for new voices, fresh voices, yes younger voices, and the time and place is now."
This comes three days after he told the nation, “Today, America has the strongest economy in the world. We’ve made historic investments in rebuilding our Nation, in lowering prescription drug costs for seniors, and in expanding affordable health care to a record number of Americans."
"We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances," Biden said in his resignation letter on Sunday. "We’ve provided critically needed care to a million veterans exposed to toxic substances. Passed the first gun safety law in 30 years. Appointed the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. And passed the most significant climate legislation in the history of the world."
"America has never been better positioned to lead than we are today," the President added.
Joe Biden Endorses Kamala Harris
Shortly after announcing he would no longer run to be re-elected, he endorsed Kamala Harris to run for President instead.
“My fellow Democrats, I have decided not to accept the nomination and to focus all my energies on my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he wrote in a follow-up post on X. “My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my Vice President. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made.”
”Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” he continued. "Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this."
