Now that she is the new face of Teen Vogue, Jordan Chiles is opening up about how she got her start as a dedicated gymnast.

“Around 14 years old, I was like: ‘You know what? I’m not going to listen to anybody,'” Chiles told the outlet. “'I’m just going to do me, go out there and have fun, and just live life to the fullest.' That’s how I overcame people always telling me to dim my light. It’s something that I don’t want to happen ever again.”

Fans are looking forward to seeing Chiles's floor routine, which is, in part, set to an instrumental version of Beyoncé’s “My House” and is considered a form of poetic justice. “Who they came to see? Me,” Beyoncé sings on the lyricized version of the song. Who rep like me?”

Now, becoming a face of the Olympics alongside Simone Biles, many are looking up to her for inspiration and motivation, especially as she brings Black Girl Magic to the gym.

“It's okay to show up with spunk and it's okay to show up and give the talent that you have and put it out into the world. So being a part of that and knowing that these last few cycles have been dominated by Black women I think it's giving a different, like perspective on what it's like in life,” Chiles said, per BET.

“Being a part of that makes me so proud because yet when I was younger, I didn't get to see a lot of Black gymnasts. I didn't get to see you girls who looked like me. I didn't grow up in that at all,” she added. “So knowing that I can be a part of that and letting the younger generation see that is a whole different story."

A few days ago, before Jordan Chiles arrived in Paris for the 2024 Olympics, the gymnast opened up about consistency and her mindset going into the big games.

"A great Olympics looks like me going out hitting a four for four," she said per BET. "So all four events, being consistent and just having fun. I'm all about having fun. I think that's the biggest thing that I've accomplished within my career is knowing that my sport doesn't have to be strict."

She added, "We don’t have to look like we don't want to be there. So I just like to have fun and I want to go out there and just enjoy every moment. I want to be like 'Okay, I've made it to the biggest stage of life and the whole world is watching.’ Hopefully, we can come back with some nice hardware and we can say that we came back with revenge and we did that for a reason.”

The 23-Year-Old Gymnast Opens Up About Her Late Aunt And Grandfather

The gymnast had to overcome some tragedies as both Chiles’s aunt and grandfather died around the same time. As expected, the losses hit Chiles hard.

“I don’t really know where I am in my healing process,” she told Teen Vogue. “Some days I feel great, and then on days like making my second Olympics, I was so happy and then I was sad that they weren’t there to witness it. They were both my biggest supporters and they are my why. They wanted this for me and I wanted to do it for them.”

The 2024 Paris Olympics kick off on July 26.
