Yet another Taylor Swift stalker has been detained, this time just moments before she took the stage in Gelsenkirchen.
Swift has snagged 14 Grammy Awards, earned platinum status for 51 songs, and made history in October 2023 as the first musician to hit billionaire status purely from her music. But behind the glitz and glamour, the 34-year-old has faced her share of challenges, including years of grappling with obsessive suspected stalkers.
The pop icon, who is dating NFL star Travis Kelce, is currently on her Eras Tour, performing her Germany leg. The drama unfolded just before Taylor Swift's first concert in the German city.
Man Who Made Threats Towards Taylor Swift Detained
According to Deadline, an American man who had threatened the pop star on social media found himself in police custody, ensuring her shows would proceed without any disruptions.
The 34-year-old suspected stalker, whose name remains under wraps, was all set for Taylor Swift's Wednesday night performance at the Veltins-Arena. But his plans took a dramatic turn when police swooped in during the entry checks. As excitement buzzed around the venue, the atmosphere shifted as authorities detained the man, leaving Swifties concerned about potential risks.
Police revealed that the man had made threats against Taylor and her partner on social media, prompting quick and decisive action. Acting on tips from the event organizers, the authorities ensured the pop star's and her fans' safety by keeping him in custody until her concerts concluded.
The Eras Tour Must Go On
The "Love Story" singer graced Gelsenkirchen with her presence for shows on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday as part of her Eras Tour. A local court has ordered the suspected stalker to remain in detention until Saturday, according to police.
Fortunately, there was no threat to Swift or her fans at any point. Wednesday night’s concert was attended by around 60,000 enthusiastic fans.
After wrapping up in Gelsenkirchen, Swift will continue her German tour with concerts in Hamburg and Munich.
Another Taylor Swift Stalker Apprehended Earlier This Year
In January, a seemingly obsessed Taylor Swift fan, identified as David Crowe, lurked around Taylor's New York City home. The man was arrested not once, not twice, but three times.
Just two hours after Crowe appeared in court earlier this year, he was seen loitering within two blocks of Swift's New York City townhome. Witnesses reported that he made his way slowly toward the pop icon’s residence. It didn’t take long for someone in the neighborhood to notice and alert the authorities, leading to Crowe’s third arrest.
Crowe is "aware of what he's doing and he's articulate. He is fixated on her and cannot keep away from where she lives. We are doing all we can to protect her," according to law enforcement who spoke with TMZ at the time.
While he pled not guilty to charges alleging he showed up at Taylor Swift’s New York home over 30 times in two months, it was later determined that Crowe was unfit to stand trial, and the criminal case was dismissed by function of law.
More Swiftie Stalkers
Another one of Swift’s more unsettling encounters involved Mitchell Taebel from Indiana.
In June 2023, Taebel was arrested and hit with charges of stalking, invasion of privacy, intimidation, and harassment. He reportedly bombarded her with messages on social media and showed up uninvited at her Nashville home.
Furthermore, he allegedly sent menacing voice messages and letters to Swift, her dad, and her backup dancers. Despite the severity of the situation, the charges against him were dismissed by December 2023.
One year prior, in July 2022, Joshua Christian found himself behind bars on charges of stalking and criminal trespassing. His obsession led him to cross state lines to reach Swift at her apartment. The NYPD revealed that this wasn’t a one-time stunt—he had previously shown up at her residence in March and June of the same year.
An intercom recording outside her building, heard by the assistant district attorney, captured Christian declaring he wanted "to set her free."
Taylor Swift Stalker Traveled 900 Miles
In 2018, Swarbrick embarked on a 900-mile journey from Austin, Texas, to Nashville, Tennessee, three times to hand-deliver letters to Swift’s former record label, Big Machine Records.
According to NewsWeek, he bombarded the company’s CEO, Scott Borchetta, with at least 40 letters and emails. Initially polite, Swarbrick’s communications took a dark turn when he didn’t get a response, evolving into threats of violence and disturbing claims of wanting to harm Swift.
By October 2019, he had pleaded guilty to interstate stalking and was sentenced to 30 months in prison, followed by three years of supervision upon release.
