Ahead of Hello Kitty's 50th anniversary, many fans learned something they apparently had no idea about - Hello Kitty is not a cat! Shocked and confused, many took to TikTok to share their thoughts.

Ahead of Hello Kitty's 50th anniversary, Japanese company Sanrio set the record straight about the identity of the popular character. Many people now feel that their whole life has been a lie learning the shocking truth that Hello Kitty is not a cat!

During a segment on "Today" on Thursday, Sanrio's senior vice president of marketing and brand management, Jill Koch, spilled the tea, and boy did that tea scorch quite a few unknowing fans.

"She's actually a little girl born and raised in the suburbs in London. She has a mom and dad and a twin sister Minnie, who is also her best friend. She enjoys baking cookies and making new friends," Koch said. "[Hello Kitty] weighs three apples and is five apples tall." She also revealed that Hello Kitty has a pet cat named Charmmy Kitty.

TikTokers Are Shook Over Hello Kitty's Identity!

When TikTokers heard the news that Hello Kitty is not a cat, they took to the app to share their shock and to talk through this new information they've learned.

"I beg your pardon? I can't take any more life-changing information," a TikToker who goes by @hennesyandtea shared in a video. "Can we please calm that down? Because why am I 30 years old and my world is shattered? My world is shattered."

The video quickly went viral with more than 2 million views and thousands of comments.

"She has whiskers and triangular cat ears. It’s a cat," one person wrote in the comment section. Another said, "She gaslighting us." One other viewer noted, "I am DONE living through historical events."

'Excuse Me?'

@Hennesyandtea is far from alone in being completely shocked over Hello Kitty being a little girl and not a cat, and not knowing this for all these years.

TikToker RaeShanda Lias also shared a video filled with questions about this news.

"Excuse me? Hello Kitty is not a cat? The executive said Hello Kitty is not a cat," she said in her recently shared video. "Who are we saying hello to?"

She continued to talk about the confusion that many people are feeling about this revelation.

"She said Hello Kitty weighs three apples and she's about five apples tall. But wait," she said. "Hello Kitty has her own cat? Hello Kitty has a cat, okay? Hello Kitty is a little girl. I can't do this. None of this is making sense to me."

Her viewers were just as confused.

"We are definitely in the Matrix," one person wrote in the comments. Another said, "Next thing you know, they’re gonna tell us that Mickey was not a mouse!"

One TikToker Shared This Information Years Ago

While this was shocking news to many people, some already knew she was a little girl and not a cat. TikToker Tina, who goes by @hangrybynature, shared this information in a video on the app in 2020.

"I'm sorry, I'm about to ruin your day," she said at the beginning of her video. "Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a British schoolkid who lives near London."

She even explained that she has a sister and a pet cat.

One viewer said, "My childhood is R U I N E D." Many other commenters wanted to know why she has cat ears and whiskers if she's not a cat.

Her popularity has only grown over the years and many different generations all over the world know and love her.

And despite all the popularity over the last 50 years, it appears that many fans had no idea all this time that she wasn't a cat.
