Disney's 'Raya And The Last Dragon' Scores Rave Reviews Days Before Release

Disney's new film "Raya and The Last Dragon" is being showered with praise by critics and being hailed for '"some of the best visual work of Disney’s 3D era."

The film, which features a predominantly Asian American cast, centers around warrior princess Raya (voiced by actress Kelly Marie Tran) from Kumandra's Heart Land. She has been training to become "Guardian of the Dragon Gem. To restore peace to Kumandra, she embarks in search for the last dragon."

The dragon (who is named Sisu) is played by actress Awkwafina.

The film will officially hit theaters and Disney+ on March 5 and is already being called a classic. Raya is currently certified fresh with a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The consensus from the top critics is, "Another gorgeously animated, skillfully voiced entry in the Disney canon, Raya and the Last Dragon continues the studio's increased representation while reaffirming that its classic formula is just as reliable as ever."

Entertainment Weekly wrote of the film, "a smart, snappy adventure tale that wears its matter-of-fact modern feminism on its sleeve — a sleeve that will be rolled up many times in the heat of battle or in search of a snack pouch. And this time, deliberately or not, they've done away with romance entirely; no prince will come, because he hasn't even been invited to the ball."

FanBoyNation raved about the animation in Raya. They said, "Raya and the Last Dragon is a technical triumph in every possible facet, simply just eye candy from start to finish."

The majority of the write-ups focused on the stellar animation and lighting seen throughout the epic animated flick.

"Some of the best visual work of Disney’s 3D era. Environments are jaw-droppingly impressive, reflecting a lived-in world that’s mythology and culture inform its architecture," wrote Jacob Oller from Paste Magazine.

A review from Film School Rejects focused on the beautiful imagery. The critic noted, "It’s fitting as water plays an important role in the tale, and you’ve never seen it animated so exquisitely as is managed here — from water droplets to nautical travel to the epic beauty of a character leaping from one raindrop to the next, it is extraordinary."

Slashfilm endorsed the movie for people of all ages. They felt the film was, "Full of chases and elaborate style action sequences that would make Indiana Jones blush… the fight scenes are simply jaw-dropping, full of energy and oomph."

The film is expected to be a massive hit for Disney and for their streaming service, Disney+.
