Kamala Harris Releases Statement Following Donald Trump Rally Shooting
Four days after Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at a Trump rally, the Vice President of the United States has officially broken her silence.
“As we all know, it was a heinous, horrible, cowardly act,” Harris said, per Fox News. “Thankfully, he was not seriously injured," adding that her and her husband's thoughts immediately went to Melania Trump, the former First Lady. "The bottom line is, no one should have to fear for the safety of a loved one because they serve in public office."
The Vice President also shared her condolences for Corey Comperatore, the late firefighter who lost his life in the shooting. "Our heart goes out to the family of Corey Comperatore a true hero who died protecting his family. And Doug and I, of course, are holding them close in our hearts," she said.
"We are also wishing those who were critically injured that day a swift and full recovery," Harris added of the two victims currently in recovery. "And we are thankful to the United States Secret Service, the first responders and local authorities."
The Attempted Assassination Of Donald Trump Raises Questions
Harris noted that the shooting also prompted questions about how individuals should interact with one another during the campaign.
"The United States of America, I believe, is the greatest democracy the world has ever known. But in the aftermath of this weekend's shootings and shooting, one of the questions we now confront is about the way we should engage with one another in this campaign," the Vice President said.
"On Sunday evening, our president, Joe Biden, issued a call for unity. And there must be unity around the idea that while our nation's history has been scarred by political violence, violence is never acceptable. There can be no equivocation about that."
Joe Biden Calls For 'Unity'
In a rare Oval Office appearance, Biden addressed the nation about the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, calling for "unity."
“I want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics,” the President of the United States said. “While we may disagree, we are not enemies. We’re neighbors, we’re friends, co-workers, citizens, and most importantly, we are fellow Americans. We must stand together."
"There is no place in America for this kind of violence — for any violence, ever. Period. No exceptions," Biden added. "We cannot allow this violence to be normalized."
Melania Trump Speaks Out On Trump Rally Shooting
Shortly after the incident on Saturday, Former First Lady Melania Trump addressed the shooting that nearly claimed the life of her husband, Donald Trump.
"I am thinking of you, now, my fellow Americans. We have always been a unique union," Melania began in a lengthy statement. "America, the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered, but our courage and common sense must ascend and bring us back together as one. When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron's life, were on the brink of devastating change."
"Let us not forget that differing opinions, policy, and political games are inferior to love," she continued. "Our personal, structural, and life commitment - until death - is at serious risk. Political concepts are simple when compared to us, human beings. We are all humans, and fundamentally, instinctively, we want to help one another."
She also thanked the "brave Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband."
Donald Trump Confirms He Was 'Shot' At Rally
Shortly after the shooting, and after Trump was seen by medical professionals, he took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to address the nation.
"I want to thank The United States Secret Service, and all of Law Enforcement, for their rapid response on the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania," the ex-president said. "It is incredible that such an act can take place in our Country."
He continued to say, "I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin."
