As reported by The Blast, Doherty passed away over the weekend at 53. Her longtime publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed her death in a statement, reading:

"It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease."

"The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace," Sloane concluded.

Doherty was vocal about her cancer battle, which began with a breast cancer diagnosis in 2015. After a brief remission, the disease returned in 2017 and worsened late last year when she revealed it had spread to her bones.

Dealing with a terminal illness was an emotional journey for Doherty, once lamenting her fate and asking "Why me?" as her condition worsened. In her words:

"I definitely have days where I say, 'Why me?'" Doherty told the publication before her passing. "And then I go, well, 'Why not me? Who else? Who else besides me deserves this?' None of us do."

When her cancer returned in 2017, Doherty confessed it was a challenging diagnosis to handle, saying, "It's going to come out in a matter of days or a week that I'm stage 4. So my cancer came back, and that's why I'm here."

She added, "I don't think I've processed it. It's a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways." Despite her health struggles, Doherty continued to live her best life and signed on the TV reboot of "Beverly Hills, 90210" in 2019.

In the final Instagram post before her death, The Blast noted that Doherty was hopeful about beating cancer. She shared a video from her "Let's Be Clear" podcast, sharing her optimism about surviving the deadly disease.

Doherty confessed that it was "scary" not knowing how long she would continue her chemotherapy treatments. However, there was hope because the molecular structure of her cancer cells had changed.

"For the first time, in a couple of months probably, I feel hopeful because there are so many more protocols now. Whereas, before, I was hopeful, but I was still getting prepared," she said.

Rest in peace, Shannen Doherty.
