Nicholas Godejohn's Final Words Before Sentencing In Gypsy Rose Blanchard Case
By Kelly Coffey-Behrens on July 13, 2024 at 12:15 PM EDT
Nicholas Godejohn was sentenced to life without parole for his involvement in the murder of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's mom. Gypsy, on the other hand, was sentenced to ten years with eligibility for parole. She was released in December, while Nicholas remains behind bars.
As The Blast previously reported, Gypsy is believed to be a victim of Munchausen by proxy as her mother, Clauddine 'Dee Dee' Blanchard, subjected her to years of fake medical diagnosis and unnecessary surgeries and prescribed medications. As she felt it was the only way out, she and her then-boyfriend, Nicholas, plotted to murder Dee Dee, a plan which they carried out in 2015.
Nearly ten years later, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was released on parole, and her case became one of the biggest headlines. As she continues to stay in the media, many are now calling for Nicholas Godejohn's case to go to retrial.
What Happened To Dee Dee Blanchard?

Dee Dee Blanchard was believed to have Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental health disorder where a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in someone under their care to gain attention or sympathy. As reported by several news outlets and shown in the 2017 documentary "Mommy, Dead & Dearest," Dee Dee falsely claimed that Gypsy suffered from various severe health conditions and disabilities, subjecting her daughter to unnecessary medical treatments and procedures.
The relationship “was either very affectionate because I was very submissive and obedient, or I was either rebellious and I would be punished for it,” Gypsy said in the docuseries. “After I would do something that my mom wanted me to do, we would go to Toys ‘R’ Us, or she would buy me a new dress, and then the next best thing was her love and affection.”
Gypsy Rose Blanchard And Nicholas Godejohn Murder Dee Dee
In 2012, Gypsy Rose met Nick Godejohn virtually on a Christian Dating website, and the two formed a relationship. They communicated for nearly three years before they met in person for the first time in 2015.
Encouraged by Gypsy Rose, Nicholas fatally stabbed Dee Dee on June 9, 2015, at the family's home in Springfield, Missouri. Godejohn received a life sentence without the possibility of parole, while Gypsy-Rose was released on December 28 after serving eight and a half years of her ten-year sentence.
Nicholas remains behind bars.
Nicholas Godejohn's Final Words Before Sentencing Goes Viral
A clip of Nicholas Godejohn awaiting his sentence is now going viral on TikTok as he expresses his final words to the judge.
"When this whole thing happened, like I've said it before in my statements, is very much the truth. So I'll just say it again," he said in the courtroom. "When this whole thing happened, all I ever really want[ed] to be is with Blanchard. That's all I ever wanted to be."
"I never knew what it was like to have a motherly love. I've never known what it's like to have a female connection. I've never known any of that," he continued. "None of it because I've never known it, that's part of the reason why I strive so hard to get it, so much to the point where I don't even understand what it even feels like to have a female connection. It's missing. It's a missing link. It's always been a missing link, it's always been one."
"And that's the reason why when I got so deep into this situation, where I fell in love so deeply," Nicholas told the judge. "Didn't you say 'love is blind?' I've always said that [and] well I admit it, I was blindly in love. That was always very much the case. It was always that way. So I understand you're a fair judge. I've heard it multiple times, and all I ask is [...] any form."

Nicholas's defense argued that Gypsy Rose had manipulated him, but the jury ultimately found him guilty. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, and was convicted of first-degree murder in November 2018.
“I felt horrible about it. When me and her were in the hotel room … she [Gypsy] kept on telling me, ‘Stop crying, stop crying. There’s no reason, reason to cry. It was my idea, it wasn’t yours. I … did what I did because I loved her. I really wanted a life with her, I really did," he told ABC's "20/20."
Reflecting On Dee Dee's Murder
When reflecting back on the night of the murder, Gypsy Rose said she hid in the room next door while Nicholas stabbed her mother repeatedly.
“I heard her scream once, and there was more screaming but not like the kind in a horror film. Just like a startled scream, and she asked, ‘Who was it that was in the bedroom?’ And she called out to my name about three or four times,” Gypsy told "20/20." “And at that point, I wanted to go help her so bad, but I was so afraid to get up. It's like my body wouldn't move. Then everything just went quiet.”
Gypsy expressed that the prospect of starting a new life made her feel both excited and overwhelmed.
“It would come in times of happiness, little spurts of happiness, but I would have breakdowns or I'd start crying, feeling remorse, guilt, and at the same time, also missing her at the same time, worry about what, what I'd just done. She's gone,” she said.
