Gypsy Rose Blanchard, 32, spent eight and a half years behind bars for her involvement in her mother's murder. Ever since she was released, rumors have circulated online revolving around her behavior while in prison and accusing her of "bragging" about the murder.
However, one of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's cellmates, Ashten Surritte, spoke with The Blast to tell her side of the story.
Life Behind Bars
Ashten Surritte spoke exclusively to The Blast about her time behind bars with Gypsy Rose Blanchard, telling us that she and the ex-convict are still friends to this day.
"Gypsy and I would have the best laughs and the best simplified moments together. Being around her would always cheer me up," Ashten, who was roommates with Gypsy for six months, told The Blast. "We would watch Lifetime together every weekend, only if there were good movies on."
When they weren't catching a movie on TV, the two "would spend time going through pictures and coloring them."
"I always loved doing Gypsy’s hair and makeup. Around that time, she was trying to get good at doing it herself, and she always loved how I would do mine, so I just did my best at giving her ideas. Then she became so good at it that I would always have to borrow her stuff because the collection of makeup became so much," she said with a chuckle.
Reminiscing About Their Time In Prison Together
Ashten went on to recall "one of her favorite memories" with Gypsy when "she decided she was going to cook a meal with Ramen noodles," but it didn't turn out as planned.
"It was disgusting," she admitted with a chuckle. "And she knew it, but she couldn’t stop laughing about it because she knew it was awful."
Gypsy also got her GED, and her reaction "to conquering something she’s been waiting so long to finish was just a memorable moment."
"I have so much fun when Gypsy and I are together," Ashten told The Blast. "Never a dull moment with her. Her heart for others and the way she will literally give her last is so touching."
"When you’re roommates day in and day out for six months, you get to see everything. The good, the bad. The way she handles her stress and the way she handles the way people are to her is truly admirable," she explained. "When we would call my family, she loved to get on the phone with them and laugh and talk. She felt like she belonged, and I loved being able to give her that. Gypsy never spoke ill of anyone and she always stuck to herself. She was definitely a homebody."
Ashten Surritte Became A 'Huge Support' For Gypsy Rose Blanchard
As The Blast reported, Ken Urker first reached out to Gypsy after seeing the 2017 docuseries "Mommy Dead & Dearest." She first got engaged to Ken, but he later broke it off, and she was "devastated," according to Ashten.
"I became a huge support for Gypsy," she told us exclusively. "At the time, she hadn’t met Ryan [Anderson] yet and was going through a lot with Ken."
"She used to come in the room and just sit next to me and cry because she was devastated about them breaking up," she continued before confirming that Ken broke it off due to the exposure Gypsy began to get after the Lifetime movie was released.
"It’s hard to have your entire life watched and criticized," Ashten added. "She was so sad. She would just lay in my arms and cry. She would try so hard to not call [Ken] but she loves him so much that she never stopped fighting for him."
Ashten later admitted that she "always thought they were meant to be."
Gypsy Rose And Ken Reunite
Gypsy had gone on to marry Ryan Anderson, but they announced their separation three months after Gypsy was released from prison. She has since gotten back together with Ken.
"I love that Gypsy is happy, and if Ken makes her happy, then I love that for her," Ashten said of her friend, whom she still keeps in contact with today. "I’m blessed to have someone as special as her to call a friend."
