Former "Sons Of Anarchy" actor Tommy Flanagan's new martial-arts show, "Wu Assassins," arrives on Netflix today, and early reviews are positive.
An early review on Forbes praises "Wu Assassins" for being one of those "cool" shows -- something that's fun and entertaining, likening its style to "Miami Vice" or "The X-Files."
"Wu Assassins" stars Iko Uwais as Kai Jin, a chef in San Francisco's Chinatown who's suddenly given the powers of ancient monks. He's now there to quell an evil force in the city.
Of course, there is always more storyline brewing underneath the main plot that will eventually reveal itself.
"Wu Assassins" director Stephen Fung was recently interviewed about the kung-fu crime/action series, and explained how Uwais' and actress Katheryn Winnick's physical skills factor into the scenes:
“Iko is a famous action star in Southeast Asia and Katheryn is a black belt in Taekwondo, and their action styles are very different from the kind we’re used to in Hong Kong action cinema. It gave me a fresh perspective and pushed me to think out of the box."

Fung, who has a background in martial-arts films, also explained a bit about the "Wu" part of the series title, giving a short primer on various veins of Chinese thought.
“I was quite intrigued by the title at the beginning, and wondered whether ‘Wu’ was a surname, or was derived from Wuxia [martial heroes] or Wu-Tang [a martial arts sect]. But after reading the script I realized ‘Wu’ referred to ‘Wu Xing’, the Five Elements theory."
