Even with their apparent closeness, Jada disclosed on "The Today Show" in October that she and Will decided to separate over seven years ago. However, she pointed out they had no plans for a formal divorce.
The "Red Table Talk" host shared that their separation stemmed from being "exhausted with trying" to improve their marriage. "I think we were both still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be," she explained.
When Hoda Kotb inquired about their living situation, Jada revealed they were living apart. She emphasized that no permanent decisions had been made regarding their future together.
"We've been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like," Jada said. The singer also highlighted their commitment to finding a path forward together.

"And then the Oscars came and believe it or not, it's like — it's crazy how intense events can bring people together. Because once the Oscars happened, Will and I got closer," she stated.
Although she did not attend the event as Smith's wife, Jada disclosed that she made a powerful decision to support him through the aftermath. In her words:
"I knew in that moment that I wasn't going to leave his side and I knew in that moment that I didn't go to that theater as his wife but I was leaving as his wife and I was going to stand by his side no matter what. And that when I knew. I was like 'I love this man.'"
The actress opened up about recognizing the depth of her love for Will, choosing to see him in a "brand new light." She also referred to their unique union as "life partners" while emphasizing, "He's my dude. He's my right hand."
