Emma Roberts and her son have been granted a temporary restraining order against an alleged stalker who broke into her home and called her cell phone using her landline.
According to documents obtained by The Blast, the 'American Horror Story' actress said she was subjected to "harassment," which has "taken the form of stalking."
Emma Roberts's Residence Broken Into By Alleged Stalker
On May 7, 2024, Roberts said she "secured and locked " her home before leaving the state of California.
Sometime between May 7, 2024, and May 8, 2024, the alleged stalker, named Melvin Jeffery Conley in the temporary restraining order, broke into her residence without consent. "While still present in my residence, [Conley] used my landline to call my cellphone. During the conversation, I realized the caller was a stranger and he confirmed he was still in my residence," Roberts said, per the documents.
"Although law enforcement was immediately contacted, [Conley] has eluded arrest and continues to send me disturbing text messages," Roberts added. "I am in sustained fear and am afraid to return to my own home."
Emma Roberts Receives 'Strange Text' From Alleged Stalker
The temporary restraining order states that Roberts received a "strange text" from "a person who identified himself as the Respondent and stated that he had yet to change his name to 'Carter.'"
Roberts admits to engaging in a brief text exchange before realizing the recipient was a stranger.
After ending the text exchange, the actress "realized there was a missed call and voicemail on her cellphone" and that the missed call came from her private home landline. "Assuming a possible family member had entered the residence for an unknown reason, [Roberts] called her home number, at which time an unknown male answered the call."
Roberts said the man referred to her by her "first name" and claimed she "gave him permission to enter and remain inside her residence," but that was "absolutely not the case," and Roberts "immediately terminated the call and contacted a friend and asked that person to respond to the residence and contact police immediately."
Emma Roberts Is 'In Fear For Her Personal Safety'
When the police arrived, "the male abandoned the property and was not located in the area," the docs state. "The male was later contacted by security team at a different location and identified as [Conley]."
Conley is "still outstanding but did indicate he would return in the next two weeks," the temporary restraining order added. "[Roberts] is in fear for her personal safety."
Roberts "has retained an investigator and the Los Angeles Police Department has opened an investigation" and "is genuinely concerned that [Conley] will continue to stalk her, and potentially cause physical harm to [herself] and her child."
The temporary restraining order says Conley "appears to be obsessed with stalking" due to the "mere fact that [Conley] took the bold step of breaking into her home is alarming."
"Not only is [Conley's] conduct illegal, his alarming conduct serves no legitimate purpose," the documents state. He also "poses a serious threat" to the actress.
Emma Roberts Is 'Concerned' For Her Child
The actress has a young child and is "concerned about [Conley's] intentions and what he might be capable of because [Conley] has mentioned my child by his name."
"This intrusion into my residence and continued contacts [Conley] have placed me in fear and has caused me to suffer substantial emotional distress," she said, per the legal documents.
The actress became a mom on December 27, 2020, when she welcomed her son, Rhodes Robert Hedlund, during the COVID-19 pandemic. She shares her son with her ex, Garrett Hedlund.
Emma Roberts Granted Temporary Restraining Order
Roberts and her child have been granted a temporary restraining order, which states that Conley must not "Harass, intimidate, molest, attack, strike, stalk, threaten, assault (sexually or otherwise), hit, abuse, destroy personal property of, or disturb the peace" of the actress or her child.
Conley is also ordered not to "contact [Roberts or her son], either directly or indirectly, in any way, including, but not limited to, in person, by telephone in writing, by public or private mail, by interoffice mail, by email, by text message, by fax, or by other electronic means."
He must stay at least 100 yards away from Roberts, her home, her workplace, and her child's school.
