Johnny Depp's Lawyer Claims Diddy's Apology Video Will Negatively Affect His Ongoing Lawsuits

Johnny Depp's lawyer, Ben Chew, has claimed that Sean "Diddy" Combs made the wrong move when he issued an apology after his assault video was released.
The music executive recently made headlines when a video of him assaulting his ex, Cassandra "Cassie" Ventura, in 2016 went viral.
Following the apology video, social media users slammed it as insincere, a sentiment Cassie's lawyer echoed in a separate statement.
Johnny Depp's Lawyer Says 'I Would Not Have Had My Client Give A Statement'
Since Cassie filed a lawsuit against Diddy, the music executive's life has been in turmoil, even though the suit was resolved within a day.
In the last few months, three additional lawsuits have been filed against him, and his residences in Miami and Los Angeles were raided as part of what appears to be an ongoing FBI investigation into him.
More recently, a video showing him brutally shoving and kicking Cassie has garnered even more negative attention for the record label owner. This prompted him to backtrack on his not-guilty stance and issue an apology for his actions.
However, according to legal experts, this move might prove costly for him in his ongoing lawsuits.
"I would not have had my client give a statement on the heels of the release of that video. And I certainly wouldn't have had him release that statement because I think it will be fodder for future examinations and deposition testimony, none of which is going to be good for Mr. Combs," said Chew, the attorney who represented Depp in his defamation trial against his ex Amber Heard, during a chat with Law&Crime Network.
Diddy's Defense Will Be Unable to Challenge Video Authenticity
Chew also claimed that Diddy's action would make it difficult for his defense to argue the video's authenticity.
"He's just thrown out the window any potential objection to the authenticity of the video. Also, I think what he said was really not helpful at all," said the attorney.
Apart from analyzing how Diddy seems to have jeopardized his suits, Chew also gave his opinion about the video, saying he was "horrified" by it and that it was a "scene of real brutality."
The high-profile lawyer also questioned why the music executive waited until recently "to come clean" after claiming in the apology video that he was "disgusted" by his actions at the time it occurred in 2016.
The Rapper Remarked That His Behavior In The Assault Video Is Inexcusable
In his apology, a solemn-looking Diddy seemingly attempted to explain away his behavior by claiming that he was facing a tough time in his life at the time when the incident occurred.
"So difficult to reflect on the darkest times in your life, sometimes you got to do that. I was f--ked up," Diddy said in a video he shared on his Instagram page. "I mean I hit rock bottom, but I make no excuses, my behavior in that video is inexcusable. I take full responsibility for my actions in that video, I'm disgusted."
"I was disgusted then when I did it, I am disgusted now. I went and I sought out professional help, I got into going to therapy, going to rehab."
Diddy also said he was committed to being a better man every day and that he was not looking for forgiveness.
Fans Slammed Diddy's Apology Video As Insincere
In the post's comments, fans dismissed Diddy's apology, criticizing its sincerity, particularly in light of his prior denials regarding the accusations against him.
One person commented, "The most insecure apology ever made. Wasn't the first time nor last. This isn't the worst of it I believe that. To bold face lie to the public and say she was only coming for a pay day. Everything done in the dark always comes to light."
Another user remarked, "Only sorry you got caught. Should've been sorry back in 2016. Rock bottom is yet to come."
In a separate statement, Cassie's lawyer, Meredith Firetog, also slammed the apology, calling it "disingenuous."
She wrote on X, "When Cassie and multiple other women came forward, he denied everything and suggested that his victims were looking for a payday. That he was only compelled to 'apologize' once his repeated denials were proven false shows his pathetic desperation, and no one will be swayed by his disingenuous words."
LA County DA's Office Will Not Prosecute Him
After the clip of Diddy beating up Cassie went viral, the Los Angeles County DA's office released a statement condemning the video while noting that they would be unable to prosecute the rapper due to a statute of limitation.
"If the conduct depicted occurred in 2016, unfortunately we would be unable to charge as the conduct would have occurred beyond the timeline where a crime of assault can be prosecuted," read a statement from the agency, where they also described the video as "extremely disturbing and difficult to watch."
They also claimed that the police had yet to inform them of bringing a case against the music mogul but "encouraged" any victims or witnesses to reach out to the Bureau of Victims Services.
