Los Angeles Angels Pitcher Tyler Skaggs Dead at 27

Tyler Skaggs, a 27-year-old pitcher with the Los Angeles Angeles, passed away today in Texas, the team announced.

The Angels announced his passing in a statement, saying, "It is with great sorrow that we report Tyler Skaggs passed away earlier today in Texas."

The statement continued, "Tyler has, and always will be, an important part of the Angels Family. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Carli and his entire family during this devastating time.

According to the Southlake Police Department, Skaggs was found unresponsive in his hotel room at 2:18 PM.

"Officers arrived and found the male unresponsive and he was pronounced deceased at the scene," police said.

No foul play is suspected and police say the investigation is ongoing.

According to emergency dispatch audio obtained by The Blast, the initial dispatchers deemed the call a "medical emergency."

In a second call, the dispatcher can be heard categorizing the situation as a "possible death investigation."

Tonight's game between the Los Angeles Angels and the Texas Rangers has been postponed.

The Rangers announced the postponement in a statement, saying, "Tonight’s scheduled game between the Los Angeles Angels and Texas Rangers at Globe Life Park in Arlington has been postponed due to the tragic passing of Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs."

The team added, "The Texas Rangers organization wants to express its deepest sympathies to the family of Tyler Skaggs and to the entire Angels organization on this shocking loss. The thoughts and prayers of every member of the Texas Rangers and all of their fans are with the Angels organization at this difficult time."

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred issued a statement saying, "I am deeply saddened by today’s tragedy in Texas. All of us at Major League Baseball extend our deepest condolences to Tyler’s wife Carli, their family, their friends and all of his Angels’ teammates and colleagues. We will support the Angels’ organization through this most difficult period, and we will make a variety of resources available to Tyler’s teammates and other members of the baseball family."

MLBPA exec. director Tony Clark released a statement saying, "The fraternity of players is stunned and saddened today by the untimely death of Tyler Skaggs, and we extend our deepest sympathies to Tyler’s wife, Carli, and the rest of his family, teammates and friends."

Skaggs was born in Woodland Hills, CA and was drafted by the Angels in the first round of the 2009 draft out of Santa Monica High School.

In July 2010, Skaggs was traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks but was traded back to the Angels in December 2013.
