Britney Spears is bearing the brunt of her father's legal bills after quietly settling his lawsuit against him.
The pop singer and her father, Jamie Spears, had been involved in a legal battle over legal fees and his handling of her finances when he was her conservator.
According to reports, Britney is furious that she had to pay her father's legal bills, which reportedly amount to more than $2 million.
Britney Spears' Legal Tussle With Her Father Has Been Settled
Shortly after a judge ended the conservatorship that granted Jamie control over the pop star's finances, the two became involved in a legal dispute. It came after her father filed that he be paid fees for lawyers he hired during her conservatorship and that his current lawyer's bills be paid.
Britney's lawyer, Mathew S. Rosengart, objected to the request, alleging that her father had inflicted significant harm on his daughter throughout his tenure as conservator.
This included allegations of illegal surveillance and self-payment of $6 million, which he characterized as financial misconduct.
Now, reports have emerged that the case has been settled out of court, ending the possibility of it heading to trial in May.
Details of the settlement have been kept out of the public, but it is understood that Britney will pay legal bills, which are reportedly worth $2 million.
Jamie Spears Is 'Thrilled' The Lawsuit Is Over
Britney is reportedly furious that the case ended with her bearing the brunt of her father's legal bill because her lawyer assured her she had a good chance of winning if they went to trial.
However, according to Jamie's lawyer, Alex M. Weingarten, his client is "thrilled" that the lawsuit debacle is "over."
The attorney added, per the New York Post, "He regrets the irresponsible and specious allegations made against him in public."
He also mentioned that Jamie has not given up on the possibility of reconciling his family differences with his daughter.
"Jamie loves his daughter very much," Mr. Weingarten remarked further. "He would love nothing more than to reconcile and be a family again. He has only ever acted in Britney's best interests."
Britney Spears Lawyer Says Her Wish For 'Freedom Is Now Complete'
The popstar's lawyer, Rosengart, said in a statement that it has been an honor representing Britney, whom he described as a "brilliant and brave artist of historic and epic proportion."
Rosengart further claimed that thanks to the court filings, Britney's "wish for freedom is now truly complete."
"As she desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to attend or be involved with court in this matter," he added.
Jamie Spears Previously Accused His Daughter Of Using Stall Tactics
The suit was settled two months after Jamie accused his daughter of dragging out their trial. The two had spent the last two and a half years in court fighting over depositions and discovery.
In legal filings at the time, Jamie claimed that the pop star was using stall tactics to prolong the case and urged the judge not to grant a stay.
"There is no reason to stay any portion of the case, and there is certainly no basis for staying briefing or any other activity that in any way relates to Jamie's pending summary judgment motion set for hearing on April 12, 2024," Jamie's lawyer wrote in a motion, per the Daily Mail.
He added, "The parties have had months (indeed, years) to discuss settlement. They have not settled. Imposing a stay simply because there is a February 23, 2024, meditation seems certain to result in a trial continuance should the parties not settle at mediation."
What Has Britney Spears Been Up To Since Leaving Her Conservatorship?
Britney spent 13 years under conservatorship before a judge ended it in 2021. The following year, she married Iranian-American actor and fitness trainer Sam Asghari, whom she met while filming the video for her 2016 song "Slumber Party."
However, their marriage was short-lived, ending in 2023. At the time, Asghari cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason behind the end of their marriage.
Britney has also written a New York Times best-seller memoir, "The Woman in Me." The book has since sold more than 2 million copies, earning her quite a sizeable amount.
As for her music career, she was featured in an Elton John song in 2022, although she claimed in her book that her music career was not her focus at the moment.
