R. Kelly is facing multiple cases of alleged sexual assault, including an upcoming criminal trial in Chicago, but his attorney says in the midst of chaos the singer remains hopeful that the legal process will work itself out and clear his name.
The Blast spoke with attorney Raed Shalabi, who recently joined Kelly's legal team and scored a victory for the singer after a judge in Cook County vacated a default judgment.
Shalabi tells us Kelly has been feeling positive about his legal battle, and thinks that he will get a fair shake in Chicago and believes the court of public opinion has changed recently, even if he admits the playing field is not "even," just yet.
In regards to the recent ruling, Shalabi says the case filed by Heather Williams is the "first time in my career in which an alleged victim is filing a lawsuit for money purposes," at the beginning of a criminal case.
He strongly believes the motivation for Williams, and many other people speaking out against Kelly, is strictly about dollars and cents.
As for the federal indictments expected to be filed against Kelly, Shalabi says there has been no legal defense strategy discussed yet, because they are waiting for the feds to make the first move.
Aside from the legal worries, Shalab says Kelly is focused on putting this all behind him and getting back to making music. He says the "Ignition" singer doesn't have any shows booked, but has been planning a comeback with the goal being to get back on stage.
