Miley Cyrus has opened up to reveal that a popular diet she was following was doing her more harm than good. The singer, 31, was once vegan, however she made 202- headlines for telling podcast host Joe Rogan that her plant-based lifestyle wasn't allowing her brain to "function properly."

In a candid reveal discussing her health and fitness, Miley said that she'd followed the "strictest" vegan diet between 2013 and 2019, but that ultimately, it just wasn't working out for her.

Scroll for more photos. “I was vegan for a very long time and I’ve had to introduce fish and omegas into my life because my brain wasn’t functioning properly,” she told The Joe Rogan Experience. The "Jaded" singer added that she was "pretty malnourished" at the time, even saying that she was "running on empty."

While a vegan diet can bring all of the nutrients needed by a human body, it can mean a lower calorie intake, overall.

“My ex-husband cooked me some fish on the grill,” she continued, mentioning ex-husband Liam Hemsworth preparing a non-vegan meal. “I cried, like, for a long time. I cried for the fish… it really hurts me to eat fish.”

'Sharper' With Meat

Reflecting on how she felt once reincorporating animal products into her diet, Miley said that she now feels "sharper." Of vegans on social media, the Grammy winner admitted that she was ready to face backlash. “They’re going to come for me but that’s okay,” she stated. “I’m used to people coming for me.”

Miley continues to prove a fitness icon. In 2024, fans have been seeing her ultra-ripped frame in skimpy outfits, and everyone knows there's an impressive workout regiment behind it. Cyrus is a fan of both yoga and Pilates and enjoys outdoor hikes.

“The thing about Ashtanga yoga is that sometimes it can be really uninspiring because the teacher will say, ‘Oh, don’t worry, that’s just going to take you 10 years [to get], and you’re like ‘Wait, what?’” she told Jimmy Fallon in 2016.

Super-Toned In 2024

Are Vegan Diets Dangerous?

While vegans often supplement the lack of animal-based products with nuts, seeds, pulses, and soy products, some experts feel that veganism just isn't healthy.

"Milk is usually the greatest source of dietary iodine," Professor Givens at the University of Reading states, adding: "Iodine is needed for synthesis of thyroid hormones so reduced thyroid hormone production can lead to weight gain and fatigue."
