Hathaway Hid Her Pain While Performing Onstage

Diving into the heartbreaking details of her miscarriage, Hathaway confessed it was a challenging period for her as she had to mask her pain while performing as a pregnant woman.

"The first time, it didn't work out for me. I was doing a play, and I had to give birth onstage every night," she recalled, noting that while she kept the miscarriage a secret, she told her inner circle the truth.

Hathaway confided in her friends when they visited her backstage because "It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine." She added:

"I had to keep it real otherwise...So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it — where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone — I wanted to let my sisters know, 'You don't have to always be graceful. I see you, and I'm with you.'"

The painful memory had Hathaway's eyes welling with emotions as she lamented: "It's really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you're doing something wrong."

The "Ella Enchanted" star addressed her pain after learning that several of her friends had gone through similar experiences. She was also shocked to find a study estimating that as many as 50 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage.

"I thought, Where is this information? Why are we feeling so unnecessarily isolated? That's where we take on damage," Hathaway explained, noting that she decided to talk about her miscarriage and help other women. She continued:

"The thing that broke my heart, blew my mind, and gave me hope was that for three years after, almost daily, a woman came up to me in tears, and I would just hold her because she was carrying this [pain] around and suddenly it wasn't all hers anymore."

When she wrote that Instagram post, Hathaway said, "It was more about what I wasn't going to do. I wasn't going to feel ashamed of something that seemed to me statistically to actually be quite normal."

The "Les Misérables" actress began her wholesome chapter with actor and businessman Adam Shulman on September 29, 2012.

The duo tied the knot in a traditional Jewish ceremony a year after her beau proposed with a ring he designed himself in collaboration with Kwiat Heritage.

The lovebirds welcomed their first child, Jonathan, in March 2016 and announced they were expecting their second son in July 2019. At the time, Hathaway opened up about her struggles with conception and infertility.

She confessed she felt "tormented" whenever she saw pregnant women while she was struggling to conceive, saying: "Each time I was trying to get pregnant, and it wasn't going my way, someone else would manage to conceive."

"I knew intellectually that it didn't happen just to torment me, but, to be honest, it felt a little bit like it did," Hathaway added.

Why She Keeps Her Sons Away From The Spotlight

The "Bride Wars" star is the proud mother of two sons — Jonathan and Jack. However, she prefers to keep her boys from the spotlight, noting that her career and family life are separate.

"It's something I feel is not just essential for my health – I'm on a team, it's my family, and it's not just about me," Hathaway explained in a 2023 interview. She continued:

"My family has needs, and one of the needs of children is that they need to be able to define their own lives. It doesn't even occur to me to link the two up, except through gratitude that they serve each other so beautifully."

"But they serve each other through me and not through a space that's outside of myself," the doting mother stressed.
