Why Amanda Bynes Allegedly Turned Down Involvement In 'Quiet On Set'

Former Nickelodeon star Amanda Bynes reportedly turned down her chance to be in 'Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV' -- but why?

As you probably know by now, various Nickelodeon alumni came forward, accusing the network and Dan Schneiderof a toxic work environment, favoritism, racism, and verbal abuse, among many other things.

Some of the stars who came forward includeDrake Bell, Giovonnie Samuels, Alexa Nikolas, and Raquel Lee Bolleau -- but one star was noticeably absent.

Amanda Bynes and Dan Schneider worked together on several Nickelodeon projects, including ‘All That’ and ‘The Amanda Show’. While the former child actress was not part of the docuseries, many other alumni came forward, allegedly her relationship with Dan Schneider was odd.

Schneider was heavily involved as a creator and producer on 'All That' and 'The Amanda Show', both of which Bynes starred. According to some of the former staff, their relationship contributed to the success of these shows and played a significant role in shaping Bynes’ early career.

Per the docuseries, she allegedly became very close to the former Nickelodeon producer as he thought he should “usher Amanda into adulthood.”

According to sources close to the former child star, both Bynes and her parents -- Rick and Lynn -- were approached to take part in 'Quiet On Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,' but they reportedly opted not to participate as Bynes "felt she just didn't have anything to share that would further their cause."

Bynes is allegedly grateful for what Nickelodeon did for her, launching her career, but she did not watch the docuseries, according to the sources who spoke to TMZ.

Her parents, however, did sit down and watch the documentary, and they were allegedly both saddened and disgusted by the allegations.

The sources added that the family as a whole had not experienced the same things these other child actors did while at the network.

Some of the former Nickelodeon staffers alleged that Dan Schneider was the one behind the emancipation idea, but he claims otherwise. “She wanted that for herself,” he told former ‘iCarly’ actor Bobby ‘BooG!e’ Bowman, “We supported her."

Schneider was referring to when Bynes allegedly wanted to conjure a plan to be emancipated in order to become more independent.

“Amanda was between the ages of 16 and 17 and she wanted to get emancipated from her parents, which was a fairly common thing with successful young actors — at least at the time,” Schneider said in his apology interview, “She wanted [the emancipation] for herself, so she turned to her team, which included her lawyer, her agent, her manager, her publicist, me — because she included me as part of her team, thought of me that way.”

Schneider added, “We supported her, she tried to get emancipated and it ended up not working out and she didn’t.”

While Amanda Bynes, herself, has not come forward about her experience working at Nickelodeon, many others shared their stories, including Drake Bell, who starred alongside Bynes on 'All That'.

Bell came forward as the 15-year-old who accused Brian Peck of s-xual abuse in the early 2000s. “My name is Drake Bell and I came here today to tell my story,” he said before detailing what he endured while working at Nickelodeon.

After the support Bell received from fans after they watched the docuseries, the former Nickelodeon star came out, slamming the network for their response.

“There’s a very well-tailored response saying, ‘Learning about his trauma,’ because they couldn’t say that they didn’t know about this or what had happened, or anything,” he said on The Sarah Fraser Show podcast of Nickelodeon's statement. “So I think that was a really well-tailored response by probably some big attorney in Hollywood.”

In a statement, Nickelodeon addressed the allegations:

“Though we cannot corroborate or negate allegations of behaviors from productions decades ago, Nickelodeon as a matter of policy investigates all formal complaints as part of our commitment to fostering a safe and professional workplace environment free of harassment or other kinds of inappropriate conduct.

Our highest priorities are the well-being and best interests not just of our employees, casts and crew, but of all children, and we have adopted numerous safeguards over the years to help ensure we are living up to our own high standards and the expectations of our audience.”

Amanda Bynes has yet to publicly comment on the docuseries, which is now streaming on MAX.
