Kelly Clarkson's legal battle with her ex-husband continues.
The 'American Idol' alum recently sued Brandon Blackstock again, this time for allegedly violating California labor laws.
Kelly Clarkson Names Ex-husband & Former Talent Agency In New Lawsuit
In her latest lawsuit, the powerhouse vocalist doubled down on her previous claims of Blackstock's crossing the line as her then-manager — a fight that earned her over $2 million in reimbursement just three months ago.
Now, Clarkson wants the rest of the profits her former beau gained for allegedly making improper business deals on her behalf. She accused him and Starstruck Entertainment — his father Narvel Balckstock's management company — of violating California labor laws.
She stressed that they broke the Talent Agencies Act by acting as an "unlicensed talent agency" while booking gigs and securing deals for her as far back as 2007. Her argument per Page Six read:
"Based on the wrongful acts and conduct of Starstruck … all agreements between the parties should be declared void and unenforceable … and all monies previously paid by cross-complainants to Starstruck should be disgorged from Starstruck, forthwith."
The Talk Show Host Wants Him To Cough Up All The Money He Received
Clarkson may have a good chance of victory as her previous lawsuit against Blackstock earned her a massive payout. Her former lover can lose this new case as only talent agents are supposed to sign business deals for their clients under California labor laws, with a few exceptions.
With this in mind, the "Since U Been Gone" songstress wants her ex-husband and her former talent agency to cough up all the profits they received. This reimbursement includes "commissions, fees, profits, advances, producing fees or other monies."
It is possible that Blackstock sparked Clarkson's second complaint, as he is currently appealing the over $2 million ruling from the last case.
If his ex-wife manages to score another victory, he will have a weaker argument as the new lawsuit includes ten additional years of improper business deals than her initial complaint.
Brandon Blackstock's Attorney Responds To Clarkson's Complaint
Naturally, Clarkson's latest filing hit a sore spot in Blackstock's camp, with his attorney coming to his defense. Bryan Freedman did not mince his words as he slammed the sensational songstress in a heated statement.
The legal representative described her actions as distasteful, noting that she had gone too far by collecting Blackstock's earnings. Freedman argued that the money was spent on the family's needs, saying:
"It is morally, ethically, and legally wrong to attempt to get monies back from your ex-husband who not only helped her as her manager but who used those earnings on their children and Kelly and Brandon's lifestyle during the marriage."
Despite Blackstock and his attorney's beliefs, it is important to note that Clarkson filed the complaints only after Starstruck Entertainment sued her in 2020 for $1.4 million in unpaid commissions for her work on "The Voice" and "The Kelly Clarkson Show."
Blackstock Was Ordered To Pay Back Over $2 Million
As stated, Clarkson's second complaint came three months after she had won back millions from her ex-husband. Last December, the California labor commissioner presiding over the former spouses' case ruled in her favor over Blackstock's improper management.
While serving as the "Stronger" hitmaker's manager, Blackstock arranged several lucrative business deals on her behalf and allegedly received benefits beyond his standard payday. The legal umpire agreed that he crossed the line with his exuberant fees and ordered him to reimburse Clarkson.
Blackstock's bill was no small number, amounting to $2,641,374. This sum included the $1.98 million commission he received for Clarkson's appearance on "The Voice" and the $93.30 he got for her hosting gig at the Billboard Music Awards.
Inside The Former Couple's Divorce Settlement
Clarkson and Blackstock have been involved in several legal disputes since their 2020 split, with their divorce being finalized in 2022. At the time, the Grammy winner was ordered to give her ex a one-time payment of $1,326,161.
As part of the settlement, the singer will also make monthly payments of $45,601 to Blackstock as child support fees for their two children — River Rose and Remington Alexander.
The former couple agreed to joint custody of their kids, but their primary residence will be with their mom.
Additionally, the settlement stated that Clarkson and Blackstock agreed to vaccinate their children from COVID-19. This decision resulted from the children's need to travel back and forth to see their father out of state.
