The Las Vegas judge, from the viral video of a shockingly acrobatic convict jumping over the court bench to attack her, has finally spoken out about the brutal incident.
The felon, Deobra Redden, is facing several charges, including attempted murder for the courtroom drama, and his victim shared her side of the story in a Grand Jury hearing on February 7.
Despite her injuries, Clark County District Court Judge Mary Kay Holthus says she is grateful to be alive because she believes the “bunny hopping” offender tried to kill her.
Las Vegas Judge Recalls Getting Slammed Into The Wall By Leaping Defendant
According to a transcript of the hearing, Judge Holthus was called as the first witness and recounted what transpired between her and Redden. The legal umpire noted the fateful day began with the felon's claims of being “a changed person” and listing all the great things he planned to do, including getting a job.
Holthus noted Redden was “super calm” while sharing his plans to change his life positively. However, his words didn't impress the judge, who stated that he had been through Mental Health Court twice and graduated but still came “back to the same place.”
Given his history as a repeated offender, she chose to sentence him to prison — a decision she was explaining to Redden when he decided to take matters into his own hands. She noted that she never expected an attack as employees in the courtroom have an unspoken system that only prepared for a felon's escape.
“I kind of give [the marshal] the look, and he knows it’s going to be time. And a lot of, most of the time if anything happens, it’s going to be they’re going to dart for the door, they go out the back,” Holthus explained.
“And so the marshal positions himself between the door and the defendant. And then upon remand time, he gets right out behind him, and that’s what he did,” she continued, adding:
“The next thing I know, he literally jumped that defense table and flew before I could even, and just slammed me into the wall. I don’t know what hit me where.”
She described the attack as “incredibly fast,” noting her head got injured after it was slammed into a marble wall behind the bench. That head injury is still “lumpy and bruised” to date, the judge claimed per the transcript obtained by Fox 5 Las Vegas.
Judge Says She Curled Into A Fetal Position While Being Attacked
Holthus shared further details about Redden's assault, recalling how the offender grabbed her by the hair and “threw her down backwards.” As he attacked her, she curled up into a fetal position on the ground while her law clerk struggled with Redden.
She stressed that she was “absolutely terrified” at the moment, believing she would have died without the assistance of her co-workers.
“If they hadn’t been there, I would not be here. I was no match. He was absolutely taking me out,” the emotional judge lamented. “If it was just me, I wouldn’t have survived multiple blows to the head, which is clearly where we were going with it. So I’m very thankful.”
Holthus doubled down on her thoughts about Redden, describing him as “very strong” and noting he “bunny hopped the defendant’s table like it was nothing.” She also stated that she sits on an elevated bench approximately four feet high, which the felon easily leaped over.
Additionally, she told the grand jury about all the injuries she suffered, some of which still bother her today. She backed up her claims with multiple pictures, which were submitted as Grand Jury evidence.
As for Redden's fate, his arraignment in the Clark County District Court is scheduled for February 29. His attack on the judge happened last month, with the video capturing the incident going viral on the Internet.
After attacking Holthus, it took two hefty men to pull Redden off the distraught judge while he kept yelling, “F–k her.” However, his rampage didn't end there as he fought the men restraining him to get back at the judge.
When he couldn’t reach for Holthus anymore, Redden began punching one of the security officers, and the incident soon turned into an altercation with the officers fighting back.
According to District Court spokeswoman Mary Ann Price, Holthus and a marshal were injured. The latter was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
