"Going into this surgery, I couldn't help but think about scars," Porizkova began. "The ones I have, I embrace. But I have no desire to make new ones. On our vacation, I kept saying goodbye to the smooth skin across my hip bones, even as I felt guilty for being vain."

"Today is day 7 post op/ 1 week," the Sports Illustrated model said. "I know the incisions will soon become a part of me. They will be a reminder of old pain and new victories. They will join all of the other inscriptions on my body and mind - both visible and invisible - all of which, ultimately, will be the glue that holds me together, a netting of past fractures which have healed stronger."
"They will become a part of what constitutes the map of me," Porizkova continued. "And like all other scars on my outside and inside, I will accept them. I will be proud of them. But I have no intention of courting new ones."

Surgery Announcement

Porizkova took to Instagram last week to announce that she was undergoing a "long overdue" double hip replacement surgery. She disclosed that her hips had been worn down over time due to congenital hip dysplasia, leaving her with no cartilage. Her announcement was accompanied by a photo of her in a two-piece bikini and another image showing her lying down in a hospital room.
As per information from the Mayo Clinic, hip dysplasia can lead to various complications, including osteoarthritis or a hip labral tear. This condition arises when the hip socket fails to fully cover the ball portion of the upper thighbone.
Porizkova expressed, "There is none left." She recounted how medical professionals reacted to her X-rays, stating, "'Well, it's bone on bone,' they exclaimed. 'At least we know you're good with pain tolerance!'"
The severity of her condition renders addressing one hip at a time ineffective, as it would hinder the healing process and mobility.
Reflecting on her situation, Porizkova expressed gratitude for having one last vacation before her surgery. She emphasized her readiness for new hips and expressed thankfulness that the problem is fixable. She found solace in trusting a specialist in anterior hip replacements and appreciated the support from her family, acknowledging her sister-in-law's advice to take a break from her usual activities and allow others to care for her.
