A verdict has been reached in the defamation trial between Former President Donald Trump and E. Jean Carroll.
As we reported, Trump was on trial as E. Jean Carroll was seeking at least $10 million in damages for “injury to her reputation, humiliation and mental anguish in her public and private life.” She also was seeking an unspecified amount in damages to "punish Trump for acting maliciously and deter Trump and others."
This comes after Trump was on trial with a different jury, who found him liable for sexually abusing Carroll in a New York department store in the 1990s.
This jury was only to determine how much Carroll should be paid -- and they have come to a decision.
Trial Jury Awards E. Jean Carroll Over $80 Million
After hearing both sides and the closing arguments, the jury has awarded E. Jean Carroll $83.3 million from Trump for 2019 defamatory statements.
Specifically, the jury found Trump should pay Carroll compensatory damages of $18.3 million. The breakdown included $11 million to fund "a reputational repair campaign" and $7.3 million for the emotional harm caused by Trump’s public statements.
Trump was also ordered to pay $65 million in punitive damages for acting maliciously in making the statements, as the jury concluded that the former President of the United States acted spitefully towards Carroll after she accused him of the sexual assault.
According to a former assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District, Andy McCarthy, “In theory, if [Donald Trump] continues to repeat what he said, she can continue to sue him, and seek more millions [in] damages."
When E. Jean Carroll took the stand, she stated, “I’m here because Donald Trump assaulted me, and when I wrote about it, he said it never happened. He lied, and it shattered my reputation. I expected him to deny it, but to say it was consensual, when it was not. But that’s what I expected him to say.”
She continued, “The thing that really got me about this was, from the White House, he asked if anyone had any information about me, and if they did, to please come forward as soon as possible, because he wanted the world to know what’s really going on – and that people like me should pay dearly.”
Donald Trump Storms Out Of Courtroom
The verdict comes just hours after the former President stormed out of the courtroom as E. Jean Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, was in the middle of his closing arguments, telling the jury the former President is a liar and thinks “the rules don’t apply to him."
“The record will reflect that Mr. Trump just rose and walked out of the courtroom,” U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan said at the time.
Donald Trump was not in the courtroom at the time the verdict was read. Judge Lewis Kaplan thanked the jury for their service after the verdict was read, and then gave them a bit of advice.
“My advice to you is that you never disclose that you were on this jury, and I won’t say anything more about it," he said before dismissing the courtroom.
