Milli Vanilli creator Frank Farian has died at the age of 82. The renowned music veteran passed on at his home in Miami two years after he received a heart valve transplant.
During his life, Farian was known for writing many classic songs for groups and helped sell over 800 million records worldwide.
Frank Farian's Work Led To 800 Million Records Sold World Wide
The music legend passed away at his residence in Miami, as reported by a statement from his agency. The musician's health reportedly deteriorated after he underwent heart surgery in 2022.
The German-born singer made a name for himself as the songwriter and producer behind the iconic disco and funk group Boney M, the Latin pop band No Mercy, and the pop duo Milli Vanilli. Some of the songs he worked on include "Daddy Cool," "Rasputin," "Mary's Boy Child,” and “Rivers of Babylon,” most of which became chart-toppers at the time they were released.
Farian also worked with other renowned musicians like Stevie Wonder, Meat Loaf, and Terence D’Arby, among others. He reportedly even turned down an offer from pop legend Michael Jackson to work on his “Dangerous” album.
He is hailed as the most successful German pop producer ever, reportedly one of the few to have sold over 800 million records worldwide, and earned 800 gold and platinum certifications. However, his achievements were often more recognized internationally than in his home country.
Frank Farian's Health Deteriorated After He Had Heart Surgery
Back in 2022, Farian had to undergo a life-saving heart valve replacement to deal with some existing heart issues.
During the surgery, a pig heart valve was inserted into his chest, as confirmed by the producer himself in an interview with Bild in 2023.
At the time, he also claimed that he was happy with the functionality of his new heart valve, jokingly saying that he had a “good pig in me.”
However, those optimistic claims from Farian seem to contradict reports that his health was failing even further after the surgery. According to reports, Farian experienced significant weight loss and relied on a wheelchair and breathing equipment due to lung issues.
Farian’s Former Colleagues Have Sent In Condolence Messages
Following his demise, statements of condolence have poured in, some of which came from those he used to work with.
“My condolences to his family,” said Fabian Morvan, one-half of Milli Vanilli. “His music will live on. We can never deny the happiness and joy it brought into this world.”
“Our work was truly blessed and so enjoyed by people around the world who had the privilege to hear it down the years,” said Liz Mitchell, who was part of the original Boney M group.
“We shared and united under a star which rose above and beyond what we ever dared to expect. I say well done to the work that we did. Rest in peace, Frank.”
In the meantime, it is unclear when a funeral will be held for Farian.
Rest in peace, Frank Farian.
