Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce revealed the real reason he decided on wearing the number 87 on his NFL jersey.
The 34-year-old was drafted by the Chiefs in the third round - the 63rd pick overall in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Last year, Travis faced his older brother, Jason Kelce, who plays for the Philadelphia Eagles, in the Super Bowl. The two made history as the first-ever siblings to play one another in the big NFL game.
Ahead of the 2023 Super Bowl, the Kelce brothers sat down for many interviews to speak on their relationship and their careers.
Why Does Travis Kelce Wear The Number 87 On His Jersey?
In one of those interviews, NFL star Travis Kelce explained that he chose the number 87 as a tribute to his older brother.
"If there is a Kelce legacy, two brothers making it to the NFL, it all started in 1987, because this big guy was born in 1987," Travis said as he patted his older brother on the shoulder.
The first time Travis ever admitted to why he chose the special number was during the 2023 Super Bowl when the Kansas City Chiefs player handed Jason his jersey.
"I love you. You're the only reason why I wear the number 87 anyway," he said as he handed his brother the jersey. "I never told you that, man. You started the legacy."

The Kansas City Chiefs ended up winning the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles. The team made it back to the playoffs this season; however, they were just eliminated on Monday night when they lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Chiefs, on the other hand, have made it past the wild-card round and are gearing up for the divisional round, which will take place this upcoming weekend.
After the Eagles were eliminated from the playoffs Monday night, Jason Kelce was extremely emotional, which fans later found out was because he plans to retire after this season.
Jason Kelce Announces His Plans To Retire
According to sources, who spoke to ESPN, Jason Kelce announced to his teammates in the locker room that he plans to retire after this season. The news came after the team lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 32-9, in the wildcard playoff game on Monday night.
Jason declined interviews with media following the game, saying, “No guys, not today." He was visibly emotional.
This news was expected by many fans as prior to kick-off, the Philadelphia Eagles player told reporters:
"Whenever you’re older in your career, you never know when that’s gonna be. I try to remind guys, and I’ve done this, and my dad’s told me this from the moment I started playing football, you step off the curb one day and, you know, that could be the end of your career."
Jason added, "So you try and approach every game with that mindset, but obviously, the closer and the older you get to that being a realization puts it out in front maybe a little bit more."
If the news is true, Jason Kelce had an incredible career with the NFL, having been selected to the NFL Pro Bowl seven times throughout the years and winning the Super Bowl with his team in 2018.
Jason Kelce has yet to confirm his retirement plans to the media.
