Nine years ago, Wilkinson admitted that getting older is "complicated."

"Some things become much clearer, I think. And then other things become much... it's complicated getting old," he said in the interview at the time." And I haven't really come to terms with it. Just... let's not go there!"

He also joked about how watching his films is 'unnerving.'

"It's always unnerving and increasingly, you look, and you think, 'who is that old fat man? oh it's me!'" he joked while on stage.

He went on to describe how "in my mind, I'm about 39 [and] there's a thing in one of the newspapers in England called 'what do you see when you look in the mirror?'"

"And I think if I was ever asked to do that, when I look in the mirror, it's not what I look like that I'm interested in; It's who I am," Wilkinson explained, adding, "You look in the mirror, and you think who is this person that I've been looking at fairly continuously for all this time -- and that's a bit of a mystery."

When speaking to the 18 months Wilkinson didn't act or land any jobs, he explained that despite being turned down, "I was always fairly optimistic, I would never really get depressed."

"Talent is important, but it's not the most important thing. The most important thing is [that] you've got to be able to take setbacks. You've got to have a thick skin," he advised to aspiring actors. "You've got to be able to go for a job you think you're perfect for and not get it and not feel bitter at the end of it. [You have to think] 'That's alright, the next one I'll get'."

Rest in peace, Tom Wilkinson.
