One Sephora customer wants to warn others with arachnophobia to steer clear of a particular body butter.
A customer who left a review under the name "chemkats" has some advice for anyone who isn't a fan of wolf spiders. Her review has caught the attention of many online.
Sephora Customer Leaves One Star Review Because She Said Body Butter Attracted Wolf Spiders
"If you're scared of wolf spiders - watch out for these lotions lol. I wanted to love them sooo bad, but one of the ingredients is like kryptonite to wolf spiders!" the review of Sol de Janeiro Delicia Drench Body Butter begins.
"When I put it on instantly one will come out. Normally I'll see one every like 3 years, used this and it was every day. I stopped using it and haven't seen one since.... oh and one time, the spider wanted to eat whatever ingredient it is so bad that it chased me. I swear on everything. I'd run left, it ran left. I ran right, it ran right. Like it was legit following the scent."
The reviewer also left a little request if you do decide to buy and use this particular product.
"So yeah, do be careful if you're frightened of spiders, especially the big wolf ones," she continued. "Also, plz don't hurt them if you do wear this & they appear. Use a cup and put them outside."
It appears that Sephora has reached out to the reviewer to make things right based on the "incentivized" message under the reviewer's name and description. That means the reviewer received something in exchange for the review, whether it's money, a product or sweeps entry.
It appears that the review was helpful to more people than not, with 995 saying it was helpful and 96 saying it was not.
And Then Reddit Entered The Chat!
One Redditor found the review to be hilarious and shared it on the social media platform saying, "This made me laugh so much, but I’ve got to admit that it has nothing to do with the performance of the product."
That's when the fun began!
"I will experiment today and keep you updated. Update 4 hours: I have seen 2 spiders at work, one came at me one didn’t. I putted some cream on a tissue to see if it would interest a spider will update soon," a Redditor who goes by heyitsjustchoco wrote.
"Update 10 hours: Spiders went to the tissue paper, I think they are attracted to the pheromones of the cream. Update 1 day: I putted another tissue paper with cerave lotion and one with this cream, I think it actually brings spiders? I have seen 8 spiders, we rarely have spiders at work. No spiders seemed interested in the cerave cream. Update day 2: I swapped places of the 2 tissues we will see."
Many others enjoyed this Redditor's approach to testing out the review to see if it has any validity. Many thanked them for doing their due diligence and sharing the results and others had jokes to add to the situation.
"BRB buying this for my in laws," one person wrote. Another added, "Watch how this product gets recalled in a few months because of this exact issue."
One Redditor did a little deep dive and was actually able to find some information to help the reviewer's claims.
"So, I went to the Google machine and found a scientific article brief about chemicals that can attract wolf spiders and then googled the chemicals cause I have too much time on my hands. I didn't find any of those chemicals or versions of them in the ingredients list. That said, 2-heptanone (one of the chemicals) has a fruity, sweet smell. Linalool has a floral scent and is really commonly used as a fragrance. I am not a scientist and I am not especially smart but like, seems like it might just smell similar enough to be true," they shared.
Another person added more information to prove it could be possible saying, "For a few years the Mazda 6 attracted spiders, because yellow sac spiders use hydrocarbons as scent markers, and the gas lines released just enough to draw them to the lines. I wonder if this is something similar."
Sol de Janeiro Reached Out To The Blast To Clarify Some Details!
Sol de Janeiro wanted to clear up any confusion on their product's ingredients and sent The Blast a statement.
"Sol de Janeiro takes the safety and concerns of its consumers extremely seriously. The brand carefully selects each ingredient for maximum efficacy and have banned the use of over 100 cosmetic ingredients in its formulations, while remaining at the forefront of developments in science and new standards around the world to ensure human and environmental health and safety, only working with partners who support the company's commitment to sustainable sourcing and science-backed safe biomimetics."
They also informed us that, "Farnesyl acetate, diisobutyl phthalate and hexadecyl acetate are not present in any of our Sol de Janeiro products, particularly Delicia Drench Body Butter and Cheirosa 59 Perfume Mist."
They also told us that any claims that say otherwise are "false and have no merit whatsoever."
"While we cannot speak to the affect these aforementioned chemicals have on arachnids, we confidently can say that these chemicals are not present in any of our products," they said.
