Former President Donald Trump has been banned from the state of Colorado's presidential ballot ahead of his 2024 re-run for office.

This is reportedly the first time in history that a presidential candidate has been disqualified under section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

In the meantime, the Colorado Supreme Court has stayed its decision until the U.S. Supreme Court gives what could be a historic ruling on the case.

According to reports, Trump's chances of running for president have been severely hampered due to a recent court ruling in Colorado, banning the presidential hopeful's name from appearing on the state's ballot.

The highest court in Colorado reversed a district court judge's decision, which found that Trump incited an insurrection for his involvement in the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, but maintained that he could not be disqualified from voting because it was not clear that the provision was meant to apply to the presidency.

According to CNBC, the court wrote in its 4-3 decision, "A majority of the court holds that President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution."

The court added, "Because he is disqualified, it would be a wrongful act under the Election Code for the Colorado Secretary of State to list him as a candidate on the presidential primary ballot."

This shocking move by the state makes it the first time in history that a presidential candidate has been disqualified under section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

The court postponed its decision until January 4, or until the US Supreme Court renders a verdict on the matter. Prior to this development, Trump's lawyer pledged to promptly challenge any disqualification of the former reality TV star at the US Supreme Court, which has the final word on constitutional disputes.

The majority in the Supreme Court went on to note that they did not reach their "conclusions lightly."

"We are mindful of the magnitude and weight of the questions now before us. We are likewise mindful of our solemn duty to apply the law, without fear or favor, and without being swayed by public reaction to the decisions that the law mandates we reach," they added. "We are also cognizant that we travel in uncharted territory, and that this case presents several issues of first impression."

Should the ruling to ban Trump remain in place, he would not be able to run for Colorado's ten electoral votes in the Electoral College, which chooses the president every four years.

Courts in other states, such as Michigan and Minnesota, have turned down similar suits seeking to ban Trump's name from appearing on the state's presidential ballot.

It is worth noting that all justices in the Colorado Supreme Court were appointed by Democratic governors.

Following Colorado state's Supreme Court's decision to bar Trump from the ballot, a campaign spokesperson for the ex-president released a statement condemning the ruling.

Steven Cheung said, per CNBC, "Unsurprisingly, the all-Democrat appointed Colorado Supreme Court has ruled against President Trump, supporting a Soros-funded, left-wing group's scheme to interfere in an election on behalf of Crooked Joe Biden by removing President Trump's name from the ballot and eliminating the rights of Colorado voters to vote for the candidate of their choice."

He branded the court ruling "completely flawed," stating that "we will swiftly file an appeal to the United States Supreme Court and a concurrent request for a stay of this deeply undemocratic decision."

Cheung added, "We have full confidence that the U.S. Supreme Court will quickly rule in our favor and finally put an end to these unAmerican lawsuits."

The presidential election is set to be held next year on November 5.
