Former Marvel star Jonathan Majors was found guilty of two out of four misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment.
Following the jury's verdict, the actor's legal team made a statement, noting that they were disappointed in the outcome but hopeful of clearing Majors' name. On the other hand, the DA's office has applauded the verdict, claiming that the trial revealed a cycle of abuse.
Majors' sentencing has now been set for next year, February 6.
Jonathan Majors' Lawyer Slams Guilty Verdict, Indicates Plan To Appeal
Shortly after Majors was pronounced guilty of assault and harassment, his lawyer, Priya Chaudhry, released a statement, expressing disappointment at the verdict and noting that they would take their grievances to court to clear the actor's name.
"It is clear that the jury did not believe Grace Jabbari's story of what happened in the SUV because they found that Mr. Majors did not intentionally cause any injuries to her. We are grateful for that," Chaudhry stated on Monday. "We are disappointed, however, that despite not believing Ms. Jabbari, the jury nevertheless found that Mr. Majors was somehow reckless while she was attacking him."
The lawyer continued, per Deadline, "Mr. Majors is grateful to God, his family, his friends, and his fans for their love and support during these harrowing eight months. Mr. Majors still has faith in the process and looks forward to fully clearing his name."
During the trial, Chaudhry accused Majors' ex-girlfriend of being the aggressor in the altercation that happened on March 25. She claimed Jabbari was out for revenge over Majors' alleged cheating and unfaithfulness.
Manhattan DA's Office Praises Jury Verdict
Unlike Majors' team, the prosecution seemed very content with the verdict, praising the jury and claiming that the evidence presented during the trial revealed a "cycle of psychological and emotional abuse" by Majors.
District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement, "At the Manhattan D.A.'s Office, we are committed to centering survivors in all of our work. The evidence presented throughout this trial illustrated a cycle of psychological and emotional abuse, and escalating patterns of coercion far too common across the many intimate partner violence cases we see each and every day."
He continued, "Today, a jury determined that pattern of abuse and coercion culminated with Mr. Majors assaulting and harassing his girlfriend. We thank the jury for its service and the survivor for bravely telling her story despite having to relive her trauma on the stand."
Speaking to the Daily Beast, attorney and director of the Incarcerated Gender Violence Survivors Initiative, Ross Kramer, also expressed gratitude for the trial, claiming that Jabbari was honest during her testimony and noting that more survivors of domestic abuse are still too scared to come forward.
He said, "Ms. Jabbari testified publicly and truthfully, even though reliving these traumatic events on the witness stand was obviously painful." The lawyer added, "Unfortunately, for every survivor like Ms. Jabbari who comes forward to hold their abuser accountable, there are many others who believe that they cannot. We hope that her actions will inspire other survivors to speak their truth and seek justice."
Jonathan Majors' Team Branded Grace Jabbari A 'Liar'
During the closing arguments, Majors' team called his girlfriend a liar who tells "white lies and pretty lies." His lawyer, Chaudhry, claimed she made up the stories of abuse in order to implicate the former Marvel star who had allegedly cheated on her.
"They bought her white lies, they bought her big lies… Who else bought her lies? These prosecutors bought Grace's white lies, her big lies, and all her pretty little lies," Chaudhry said last Friday.
She talked about Majors' driver, Naveed Sarwar, who testified that Jabbari was the aggressor in the incident. The driver accused the 30-year-old dancer of hitting Majors and claimed that the actor did nothing but try to "get rid" of his ex-girlfriend.
"[Jabbari] was yelling at [Majors], and they were having an argument. I had a feeling [Jabbari] had hit [Majors] earlier, the way she was fighting and the sounds produced," Sarwar told the court on Monday, December 11.
Alluding to his account of things, Chaudry said to the jury, "You heard from the driver who told you that Grace had attacked Jonathan all night, that Jonathan asked to stop the car, that Jonathan was trying to get rid of her, that he was trying to get her to leave him alone."
Jonathan Majors' Career Has Been Derailed By The Trial And Verdict
Prior to Majors' guilty verdict, he had already begun losing major deals due to the allegations alone. Majors was removed from an upcoming film adaptation of Walter Mosley's 2004 novel, "The Man in My Basement," a project he was reportedly set to executive produce.
The "Creed III" star was no longer considered for the biopic about the late musician Otis Redding. It was also reported that Majors will no longer star in an advertising campaign for the Texas Rangers MLB team.
Now, with him being charged with assault and harassment, movie giant Marvel has officially cut ties with the actor. In the meantime, it is yet to be determined what will happen to Majors' Marvel projects and if the actor's role as Kang The Conqueror will be recast.
