Jason Momoa On Providing Aid For Maui Wildfire Victims: 'Respect The Culture'

Jason Momoa has shared his view on how aid-givers can support victims of the Maui wildfires. The actor revealed in a recent interview that respecting the culture and those who need the space is necessary.

Momoa had earlier taken to his Instagram page in August to voice his support for the victims in the wake of the disaster.

In an interview with People Magazine, Momoa continued his longstanding advocacy for support for those affected by the severe wildfires that swept across Maui and parts of Hawaii's Big Island in recent months.

The actor shared that, while many outsiders might be eager to help, it requires them to first "educate" themselves, which he believes is "the biggest thing" when it comes to giving humanitarian aid. Momoa also emphasized that this should be done with "proper respect" for the "culture" and for those who "need the space."

Using himself as an example to make his point, Momoa revealed that he did not immediately rush down to Maui following the devastating wildfires. He claimed to have waited until he was permitted to do so by the necessary authorities.

"I waited for my family to be invited in properly," the" Aquaman" star continued, adding, "Respect the culture."

The Hawaii native previously voiced his support for the communities impacted by the disaster at the time.

Taking to his Instagram page, Momoa said that he and his family were "devastated" and "heartbroken" and shared a link to organizations that are helping. He also added a video of flaming debris in Lahaina Harbor on the western side of the island of Maui, along with other shots of the burned-down Lahaina town.

In a statement shared with People, the actor reiterated his support for those affected while urging everyone to get involved in preventing future occurrences.

"The destruction caused by these fires is heartbreaking, but our community's resilience and strength will shine through," Momoa said.

"Let us all do our part to prevent the further spread of the fires and support those on the front lines, working tirelessly to protect our homes and natural treasures."

Momoa is also known for being an ocean conservationist and is currently an advocate of Life Below Water for the United Nations.

Last year, he even shaved his famous locks as a sign of solidarity for keeping the ocean clean from plastics and other foreign items endangering its ecosystem. At the time, he shared a video of the process while urging his listeners to help keep the ocean clean.

"I am shaving off the hair…doing it for single-use plastics," Momoa said on the video. "I'm tired of using plastic bottles, we gotta stop, plastic forks, all that s---, goes into our land, goes into our ocean."

He added, "I'm here in Hawaii right now, and just seeing things in our ocean, it's just so sad. Please, anything you can do to eliminate single-use plastics in your lives. Help me, plastic bottles are ridiculous… we're going to keep going — oh, man."

With regards to his career, Momoa is set to reprise his role as Aquaman in the upcoming sequel, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."

The movie, which will debut before the end of the year, serves as the final DCEU movie before the DCU reboot helmed by James Gunn and Peter Safran.

This has led to speculation that the actor will not be reprising the role in the upcoming DCU reboot, an uncertainty that he has confirmed publicly.

"I don't necessarily want it to be the end... [but] I don't think it's really, like, a choice," Momoa said, per Entertainment Tonight. "The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there's a possibility. But right now, I'm like, 'It's not looking too good.'"

Momoa went on to say that he is open to playing the role for a "long time" if the opportunity is available.

"I love this character." Momoa continued. "I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, there are a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world."
